Maku Defects to SDP, Pledges Support Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Minister of Information and Supervising Minister of Defence, Labaran Maku, has formally defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), declaring his intention to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. The announcement was made at his residence in Wakama, located in Nasarawa State, during a meeting with journalists and party officials.

Maku explained that his decision was driven by internal challenges within the PDP as well as growing calls from his constituents to pursue a new political direction. He emphasized that his move to the SDP is aimed at contributing meaningfully to both state and national political development, while also honoring notable political figures whose legacies he respects.

Reasons Behind the Defection

In a resignation letter addressed to his ward chairman in Wakama, Maku expressed appreciation to the PDP for the opportunities it provided him throughout his political career. Having served in several key roles, including commissioner, deputy governor, and minister, he acknowledged the platform the party gave him to contribute to governance and development.

However, he stated that ongoing internal crises within the PDP made his continued membership untenable. According to him, persistent appeals from constituents across Akwanga, Nasarawa Eggon, and Wamba further influenced his decision, urging him to align with a platform they believe can better represent their interests.

Maku also noted that his choice of the SDP was partly symbolic, as he sought to honor the legacy of Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, whom he described as one of the most impactful representatives of Nasarawa North.

Political Ambitions and Party Strengthening

The former minister expressed readiness to play an active role in strengthening the SDP’s presence across Nasarawa State, noting that the party already has a growing support base in all 13 local government areas. He voiced confidence that his entry into the party would further consolidate its structure and outreach ahead of future elections.

Maku also hinted at the possibility of contesting the vacant Nasarawa North senatorial seat, following the passing of Senator Akwashiki. He stated that he is prepared to accept any responsibility assigned to him by the party and the people, once the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) initiates a by-election process.

In addition, he advised state governors across the country to avoid imposing candidates in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. He stressed that transparent leadership selection and good governance remain essential to sustaining democracy and fostering development.

Reactions from SDP Leadership

Reacting to the development, the SDP Zonal Chairman for Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Mohammed Audu, welcomed Maku into the party. He commended the former minister for his decision and assured him of equal treatment and full participation in party activities.

Audu emphasized that the SDP remains committed to inclusivity and fairness, stating that all members, regardless of their background, would enjoy the same rights and privileges within the party. He expressed optimism that Maku’s experience and political influence would significantly contribute to the party’s growth in the state and beyond.
