Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has announced plans to formally defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Thursday, alongside his supporters, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
The development follows months of internal discord within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), prompting the Governor Mohammed to explore alternative political platforms.Governor Mohammed disclosed the move after hosting top ADC leaders at the Government House in Bauchi, signaling what could become a defining moment in the evolving political landscape ahead of future elections.
Mounting Crisis Within PDP Drives Governor Mohammed Defection Plans
Governor Bala Mohammed attributed his planned exit from the PDP to a deepening leadership crisis that has plagued the party since mid-November 2025. The crisis intensified after a faction led by Kabiru Turaki conducted a controversial convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, further dividing the party’s leadership structure.
According to the Governor Mohammed, multiple reconciliation efforts were initiated at both national and state levels but failed to yield meaningful results. Committees were set up to explore possible resolutions and alternative pathways, including consultations with other major political parties. However, these efforts reportedly exposed growing resistance and internal fragmentation within the PDP.
Governor Mohammed stated that the party’s current condition has created uncertainty among its members, describing it as “a very serious ambivalence” with no clear leadership direction. He emphasised that the inability to restore unity has forced key stakeholders, including himself, to reconsider their political future.
ADC Emerges as Preferred Political Platform
The African Democratic Congress has now emerged as the preferred destination for the Bauchi governor and his political allies. Governor Mohammed revealed that the party’s national chairman, Senator David Mark, extended a formal invitation following extensive consultations, offering what he described as an “olive branch” to reconnect with the broader opposition movement.
While acknowledging the invitation, Governor Mohammed noted that discussions are still ongoing and no final decision has been fully concluded. He stressed the importance of due diligence, given his responsibilities as a prominent political figure at both state and national levels.
The Governor Mohamed further highlighted the need for careful engagement with stakeholders across the PDP to ensure a smooth and coordinated transition. He warned against hasty decisions that could lead to political miscalculations, adding that consultations would continue before any official declaration is finalised.
Political Calculations and Electoral Strategy
Governor Mohammed underscored that the move is driven not only by internal party issues but also by strategic electoral considerations. He maintained that political strength ultimately lies with the electorate rather than party structures, reaffirming his confidence in grassroots support.
He also disclosed that his supporters have been mounting increasing pressure on him to make a decisive move, reflecting broader dissatisfaction within the PDP ranks. This pressure, combined with the party’s instability, appears to have accelerated the push toward realignment.
Despite exploring multiple options—including possible engagement with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—the governor indicated that remaining within a viable opposition platform is essential. He stressed that political relevance requires alignment with a party that offers both acceptance and strategic opportunity.
Mohammed concluded by expressing optimism about the ADC’s potential, noting that elections are ultimately decided at the polling unit level and not by party dominance alone. He reiterated his readiness to compete politically, asserting that his camp is not intimidated by any opposition.
