The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Governor Alex Otti following a tense exchange between the governor and a journalist during a recent media engagement in Umuahia. The incident, which occurred during the February edition of the governor’s regular live broadcast, has sparked debate about transparency, accountability and the role of the press in a democratic society.
The journalist, Chika Nwabueze of BON Media Group, had requested verifiable data to support claims that the administration’s policies had improved the economic conditions and living standards of residents since May 2023. Governor Otti’s response, which included dismissing the question as poorly prepared and inappropriate for the platform, has since drawn political reactions, particularly from the opposition APC in the state.
The Exchange at the Media Chat
The exchange took place during Governor Otti’s monthly media chat held in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. The programme, broadcast live to residents and viewers beyond the state, is designed as a platform for direct engagement between the governor and members of the press.
During the question-and-answer session, Nwabueze asked the governor to provide measurable and quantifiable evidence, beyond visible infrastructure projects such as road rehabilitation, to demonstrate how government policies had tangibly improved socio-economic realities in the state. The question focused specifically on data-driven proof of economic impact.
In response, Governor Otti, a member of the Labour Party, challenged the premise of the question. He suggested that as a resident of Abia State, the journalist should be able to observe improvements and possess relevant information. The governor described the platform as a “serious” engagement, adding that it was not intended to entertain what he characterised as unprepared or frivolous inquiries.
APC Condemns Governor’s Conduct
Reacting to the development, the Abia State chapter of the APC issued a statement describing the incident as unfortunate. The APC expressed concern over what it termed the governor’s troubling conduct, arguing that such reactions raise questions about temperament and commitment to democratic accountability.
According to the APC, democracy thrives on transparency and mutual respect between elected officials and the media. The party emphasised that journalists serve as watchdogs of society and are trained professionals responsible for asking probing questions and seeking clarification on public expenditures and policy claims.
The APC further maintained that public office holders must be prepared to defend their policies with verifiable data rather than emotion. It stressed that requests for proof of performance should be viewed as civic responsibility rather than hostility, adding that open questioning is a cornerstone of democratic governance.
Broader Implications for Governance and Press Freedom
The incident has reignited conversations about the relationship between political leaders and the media in Nigeria’s democratic system. Media engagements are widely regarded as opportunities for transparency, enabling citizens to receive direct explanations of government actions and policies.
Observers note that tension between public officials and journalists is not uncommon, particularly when questions involve economic performance and measurable outcomes. However, many governance advocates argue that calm and evidence-based responses enhance public confidence and strengthen institutions.
The APC, in its statement, urged Governor Otti to embrace fact-based governance and demonstrate openness to dissenting voices. The APC concluded that free journalism remains a pillar of good governance and must be respected and protected in order to safeguard democratic principles.
