APC Rejects ADC Allegations Over Edo Shooting, Demands Full Investigation

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly rejected allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) linking it to the recent shooting incident at a political gathering in Edo State. Describing the claims as baseless and reckless, the ruling party has called for a comprehensive investigation by law enforcement authorities to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC urged security agencies to conduct an impartial probe and scrutinise all relevant parties. The development follows reports that gunshots were fired during an ADC event in Edo State earlier this week, raising concerns about political safety and security.

APC Denies Involvement, Calls for Due Process

The APC dismissed the ADC’s accusation that it was responsible for the shooting, insisting that the claim was made without evidence and prior to any formal investigation. The party criticised what it described as a premature conclusion by the opposition, arguing that due process must be respected in matters of public safety.

According to the APC, it is inappropriate for any political party to assume the roles of accuser, investigator, prosecutor, and judge simultaneously. The ruling party maintained that such an approach undermines the rule of law and weakens public trust in democratic institutions.

The party further stated that violence in the political arena is unacceptable and should be condemned by all stakeholders. It reaffirmed its commitment to law, order, and national security, while urging security agencies to carry out an expeditious and thorough inquiry into the incident.

Incident at Edo Event Raises Political Tensions

Reports indicate that the shooting occurred during an ADC gathering in Edo State, where several prominent political figures were present, including former Edo State Governor John Oyegun and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi. Also reportedly in attendance was Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in the state.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the ADC alleged that the attack reflected a troubling pattern of political intimidation by the ruling party. It characterised the incident as part of broader acts aimed at suppressing opposition voices.

The APC, however, countered that the allegations were entirely unfounded. It described the characterisation of the incident as “acts of terrorism” by the ruling party as reckless, arguing that such language trivialises the nation’s ongoing security challenges and the sacrifices of security personnel combating terrorism across the country.

Political Reactions and Call for Investigation

While denying any involvement, the APC called on the police and other law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice. It also urged authorities to examine all possible leads, including internal dynamics within the ADC, which it claimed may be relevant to understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The ruling party emphasised that it remains focused on governance and recent electoral successes in various parts of the country. It cited victories in the Federal Capital Territory municipal elections and constituency elections in Rivers and Kano states as evidence of growing public support.

Reaffirming its support for President Bola Tinubu, the APC stated that both the administration and the party remain committed to building a stronger, more resilient, and prosperous Nigeria. It stressed that maintaining peace and upholding democratic norms are essential to achieving national development goals.
