Obi Breaks Silence After Gunmen Attack in Benin, Raises Concerns Over Nigeria’s Democracy

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has spoken out following a gunmen attack in Benin City, Edo State, describing the incident as a troubling reflection of the state of Nigeria’s democracy. The attack reportedly occurred at the residence of former APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, shortly after a political gathering in the city.

In a video circulating online, Obi condemned the violence and called for urgent action to safeguard democratic values and public safety, stressing that the country must not allow lawlessness and political intimidation to thrive.

The incident reportedly took place at the Benin City residence of former Edo State Governor and former APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun. Eyewitness footage showed visible bullet holes on the estate gate, as well as several vehicles damaged by gunfire.

According to reports, the attack occurred shortly after Obi, Odigie-Oyegun, and other political figures attended the formal declaration of Barrister Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin. The gathering had drawn prominent political actors from different platforms.

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, alleged that armed individuals trailed the delegation from the ADC Secretariat to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence before opening fire. He described the incident as a failed assassination attempt targeting key political leaders, adding that several official vehicles were destroyed in the process.

“This is where our democracy has reached. A former governor, and you can see what happened in front of his house, where hoodlums came shooting,” Obi said. He stressed that Nigeria cannot afford a climate where citizens and public officials alike live under threat.

Obi further asserted that the country must not tolerate what he described as “terrorism” or any form of intimidation, whether by criminal elements or individuals in positions of authority.
