Benue Deserves Peace: Shettima Urges Akume, Alia to Mend Fences and Work as One

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has called for reconciliation between the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, urging both leaders to set aside their differences in the interest of peace and development. He stressed that Benue State deserves unity among its political leaders to effectively address its pressing security and socio-economic challenges.

The Vice-President made the appeal on Tuesday during the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Summit organised by the Progressive Governors’ Forum at the State House in Abuja.

Shettima Call for Unity in the Interest of Benue

Addressing participants at the summit, Shettima underscored the importance of collaboration among political leaders, particularly at a time when many states are grappling with insecurity and economic pressures. He noted that public disagreements between prominent figures could undermine governance efforts and weaken public confidence in leadership.

Without delving into specifics of the rift, the Vice-President emphasized reconciliation and teamwork as essential tools for stability. He appealed directly to both Akume and Alia to prioritise the welfare of the people over personal or political differences, stressing that governance should remain focused on service delivery and peace-building.

Observers say the appeal reflects growing concern within the ruling party about internal divisions that could affect political cohesion and governance outcomes in Benue.

Renewed Hope Agenda and Political Cohesion

The Renewed Hope Ambassadors Summit provided a platform for discussions on governance, party unity, and strategies to strengthen development initiatives across states. Participants highlighted the need for alignment between federal and state actors to ensure effective implementation of policies under the current administration.

Shettima reiterated that unity among stakeholders is central to advancing the administration’s broader agenda. He urged political actors to avoid actions that could escalate tensions or distract from developmental priorities.

Political analysts note that Benue State has faced persistent security challenges in recent years, making cooperation among its leaders particularly crucial. They argue that coordinated leadership is essential to stabilising communities and fostering economic growth.

The Stakes for Benue State

Benue, often referred to as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” remains strategically important to Nigeria’s agricultural sector. However, recurring conflicts and political disagreements have posed challenges to governance and investment confidence.

By urging reconciliation, Shettima signalled the federal government’s interest in ensuring that internal political disputes do not hinder peace efforts or developmental progress. His remarks suggest a desire to strengthen unity within party ranks while reinforcing stability at the state level.

As political actors respond to the Vice-President Shettima appeal, attention will likely focus on whether concrete steps toward reconciliation will follow in the coming weeks.
