APC Retains AMAC as Maikalangu Secures Second Term in FCT Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) following the conclusion of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections.

The declaration was made by the AMAC Collation Officer, Prof. Andrew Abue, who confirmed that Maikalangu secured the highest number of valid votes cast in the election. The announcement marks the return of the incumbent chairman for another term in office, after polling 40,295 votes out of a total of 62,861 valid votes.

Official Results and Voting Statistics

Prof. Abue stated that the total number of votes cast in the election stood at 65,197, with 62,861 valid votes and 2,336 rejected ballots. He further disclosed that AMAC has 837,338 registered voters, while 65,676 voters were accredited for the exercise.

According to the official figures, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 3,398 votes. Other political parties also recorded varying numbers across the council’s wards.

The Collation Officer affirmed that Maikalangu, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, was thereby declared elected and returned as chairman of AMAC.

Performance of Political Parties and Candidates

A total of political parties contested the AMAC chairmanship election, reflecting a competitive democratic exercise. Among the contestants were candidates from the Accord Party, Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Allied Peoples Movement, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressives Party, Zenith Labour Party, and others.

Notably, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) polled 1,694 votes, while the Social Democratic Party (SDP) recorded 2,185 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) garnered 1,111 votes, and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) secured 421 votes. Smaller parties recorded modest tallies, contributing to the overall total.

The PDP, despite finishing third in the chairmanship race, reportedly won two ward councillorship positions in Karu and Karishi, indicating a measure of competitive participation across party lines.

Reactions and Political Implications For AMAC council Area

Speaking shortly after the announcement, the APC Collation Agent, Gambo Babale, described the election and collation process as credible and transparent. He commended INEC for what he termed a thorough and well-managed process across polling units, ward collation centres, and the area council collation centre.

Babale noted that the outcome reflected voter confidence in the APC and expressed optimism about the party’s broader electoral prospects in 2027. He added that Maikalangu’s re-election presents an opportunity to deliver further dividends of democracy to residents of AMAC.

Similarly, the YPP Ward Collation Agent, Abdullahi Ibrahim, acknowledged the transparency of the process and congratulated the winner, underscoring the generally peaceful conduct of the election.
