FCT Area Council Elections: Wike Declares Work-Free Day, Imposes Movement Restriction to Ensure Credible Polls

FCT Area Council Elections: Wike Declares Work-Free Day, Imposes Movement Restriction to Ensure Credible Polls

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will observe a work-free day on Friday, February 20, 2026, following a directive by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, as preparations intensify for the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21.
In addition to the public holiday, the minister announced a restriction of movement across the territory from 8:00 p.m. on Friday to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The measures, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, are aimed at facilitating broad participation and ensuring orderly conduct during the elections.

The announcement was made during a special broadcast aired nationwide on Thursday evening, where the minister outlined the administration’s plans to guarantee a peaceful and credible electoral process in the six area councils of the FCT.

Measures to Facilitate Voter Participation

Mr Wike explained that the declaration of a work-free day would enable residents to travel to their respective communities and participate fully in the election of chairmen and councillors. He noted that the restriction of movement was designed to safeguard the integrity of the process and prevent disruptions.

According to the minister, security agencies have been directed to enforce strict compliance with the movement order. He emphasised that the measures were preventive rather than punitive, aimed at creating a calm environment conducive to free and fair voting.

Residents were urged to adhere strictly to the guidelines and cooperate with law enforcement authorities throughout the election period. Essential service providers are expected to operate within established protocols to avoid unnecessary hardship.

Call for Peaceful and Orderly Conduct by minister Wike

In his address, the minister called on residents to turn out in large numbers to exercise their civic rights. He underscored the importance of discipline, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law.

“Let us respect the rules, respect each other, and respect the outcome of the election,” Mr Wike stated, urging voters to demonstrate maturity and responsibility. He added that the conduct of the election would reflect the democratic values of the territory and the nation at large.

The FCT Administration expressed optimism that the exercise would produce leaders capable of advancing development, strengthening peace, and promoting prosperity across the councils.

Electoral Reforms and Institutional Strengthening

The minister also commended President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, describing the move as a significant step toward reinforcing democratic institutions. He said the amendment underscores the administration’s commitment to transparency and electoral credibility.

Observers note that the FCT elections are often regarded as a barometer of local governance and political engagement within the nation’s capital. As such, the forthcoming polls are expected to attract considerable public interest.

With security agencies on alert and administrative preparations nearing completion, attention now turns to residents as they prepare to cast their votes in what authorities hope will be a peaceful and exemplary democratic exercise.
