Federal Government Takes NIN Registration to Every Ward Nationwide

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced plans to commence nationwide ward-level enrolment for the National Identification Number (NIN) beginning next week. The initiative is designed to take registration closer to citizens in rural and underserved communities, eliminating long-distance travel and bottlenecks that have slowed the process in the past. According to the Commission, the exercise forms part of a broader federal strategy to ensure every Nigerian is captured in the national identity database.

Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, explained that the programme follows a presidential directive mandating the decentralisation of NIN registration. He noted that the government is determined to remove barriers that have made enrolment difficult for millions, particularly at the grassroots. The new approach will involve collaboration with local authorities and community structures to guarantee wider participation.

Expanding Access to the Grassroots and NIN purposes

The ward-level enrolment scheme represents a significant shift from the previous system, which was largely concentrated in urban centres and designated offices. NIMC officials disclosed that mobile registration units and temporary centres would be deployed to markets, schools, religious institutions, and community halls to capture residents who have yet to obtain their NIN. This, they believe, will drastically reduce congestion at existing centres.

The corresponded stated that the Commission has already begun training ad-hoc staff and partnering with state and local governments through the use of youth and cooper to ensure smooth implementation. He added that special attention would be given to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, persons with disabilities, and residents in hard-to-reach areas. “No Nigerian should be excluded from the national identity system because of location or circumstance,” he said.

Technology and Data Protection Measures

NIMC also assured the public that robust technology would be deployed to safeguard personal data during the exercise. The Commission said the new enrolment devices are equipped with improved biometric features to prevent duplication and identity fraud. Real-time verification with the central database is expected to enhance accuracy and credibility.

Furthermore, officials emphasised that all registrationof NIN would remain free of charge. The agency warned against activities of touts and unauthorised agents who exploit citizens by demanding illegal fees. Security agencies and local leaders have been urged to support monitoring efforts to protect applicants throughout the process.

Economic and Social Benefits of NIN

Experts believe that a comprehensive national identity database is critical for economic planning, social welfare distribution, and national security. With many government services now linked to the NIN, expanding enrolment is expected to improve access to banking, healthcare, education, and digital services. The initiative is also seen as a boost for financial inclusion and transparent governance.

Citizens have welcomed the development, describing it as long overdue. Many residents in rural communities have complained for years about the cost and stress of travelling to distant centres. The ward-level model is expected to restore public confidence and accelerate Nigeria’s journey toward a reliable identity management system.
