ADP–Atiku Talks Focus on 2027 Elections, Democratic Collaboration

Leaders of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) have confirmed that their recent meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was centred on preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections and broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic space. The engagement, held in Abuja on February 1, has since generated political debate amid speculation about possible opposition realignments ahead of the next presidential contest.

According to the ADP leadership, the discussions were not driven by personal ambition or immediate coalition arrangements but by the need to reinforce democratic pluralism and ensure that opposition parties remain viable, organised and competitive in the face of mounting political challenges.

Purpose of the Meeting and Democratic Objectives

The National Chairman of the ADP, Yabagi Sani, explained that the meeting with Atiku Abubakar was part of a wider consultation process aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s multi-party democracy. He said the engagement was designed to explore how opposition actors could collaborate to ensure balance and accountability in the political system.

Sani noted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) currently dominates the political landscape, raising concerns among opposition parties about shrinking democratic space. He stressed that discussions with Atiku were therefore focused on strengthening opposition capacity and sustaining pluralism, rather than advancing a single political ambition.

According to him, the ADP believes that democracy thrives when opposition parties are stable, encouraged and free to operate without undue pressure. The party views such consultations as necessary steps towards ensuring credible political competition in future elections.

2027 Elections and Opposition Strategy

The ADP chairman disclosed that the meeting could also be linked to early preparations for the 2027 elections, particularly in light of the complex legal and technical challenges that often arise during electoral cycles. He said opposition leaders were exploring ways to avoid situations where candidates or parties are disqualified close to elections, leaving limited options.

Part of the discussions, he revealed, involved the idea of a “Plan B,” where alternative platforms could remain available should legal disputes or procedural hurdles affect any single party. This approach, he explained, is intended to protect the broader opposition movement from disruption and prolonged court cases that could weaken electoral prospects.

Sani added that consultations were ongoing with a wide range of political stakeholders, including other opposition parties, civic groups and youth organisations, as part of efforts to build a more resilient democratic front ahead of 2027.

ADP’s Position on Alliances and Future Engagements

Another senior ADP official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, clarified that while the party is open to dialogue, it does not intend to enter into a formal coalition arrangement at this stage. He said the meeting with Atiku was one of several engagements aimed at understanding how like-minded political actors could work together to challenge the APC-led government.

The official emphasised that the ADP is also engaging with other opposition leaders beyond Atiku Abubakar, with the goal of expanding political options for Nigerians seeking alternatives to the ruling party. He described the conversations as issue-based, focusing on democracy, governance, national development and addressing the country’s socio-economic challenges.

According to him, the essence of the engagement was not power-sharing but the need to rescue and strengthen democratic governance in Nigeria through cooperation, dialogue and strategic planning among opposition forces.
