Renowned actor and filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has shared candid thoughts on what truly matters to him in the movie business, stressing that raw box office figures alone do not define success. According to him, financial sustainability is more important than chasing billion-naira headlines.
Afolayan made this known while speaking at the launch of his latest movie, where he addressed questions around competition, earnings, and the pressure to break records in the Nigerian film industry. He emphasized that he is not in rivalry with any filmmaker and does not measure success by comparisons.
The award-winning filmmaker explained that his primary concern is ensuring that every project he undertakes yields reasonable personal returns. For him, a movie that grosses massively but leaves the producer with little profit is not a win in any real sense.
“I’m Not in Competition With Anyone” — Kunle Afolayan Explains His Business Philosophy
Kunle Afolayan has reiterated that competition is not what drives his work as a filmmaker, noting that his goals are rooted in long-term business sense rather than industry rivalry. He believes every creative should define success on their own terms.
While addressing fellow filmmakers, Afolayan stated clearly that he has no interest in producing a cinema movie that grosses between ₦1 billion and ₦2 billion if, in the end, his personal profit does not even reach ₦10 million. He described such outcomes as unsustainable.
He further explained that filmmaking should not just be about public applause or social media hype. Instead, he advocates for a model where creators are adequately rewarded for their investment, effort, and risk.
Kunle Afolayan Prioritizes Sustainable Profits Over Billion-Naira Headlines
Veteran filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has opened up about his approach to filmmaking, revealing that profitability and structure matter more to him than record-breaking cinema earnings. According to him, gross figures can be misleading if they do not reflect actual profit.
Speaking during the unveiling of his new movie, Afolayan said he is more interested in building a system that ensures filmmakers enjoy fair returns. He noted that chasing headlines without financial gain does not make business sense.
He concluded by encouraging industry players to rethink how success is measured in Nollywood. Rather than focusing solely on box office milestones, Afolayan believes the industry should prioritize transparency, sustainability, and proper compensation for creatives.
