Atiku, 2023 Presidential Candidate Challenged: Wike Sparks Controversy with Call to Suspend Him as Power Roils PDP

Nyesom Wike Sparks Controversy With Call To Suspend Atiku

Atiku Abubakar versus Nyesom Wike, is a fresh twist of internal strife within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Supporters of the presidential candidate, Atiku have vehemently criticized calls for his suspension from the party by Nyesom Wike, denouncing them as “baseless and unreasonable.”

The agitation for Atiku’s suspension gained momentum, with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, allegedly aligning with certain members of the National Working Committee (NWC) in a bid to strengthen his influence within the party.

Governor Wike Calls for Suspension of Key PDP Figures

Last week, Wike publicly urged the NWC to suspend Atiku Abubakar and Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a former Sokoto State governor and Director General of the PDP Presidential Campaign. He asserted, “I am calling on the NWC to, as a matter of urgency, suspend the presidential candidate of the party; suspend Aminu Tambuwal; and Sule Lamido, former Jigawa State governor.”

Wike’s stance was grounded in his belief that “the party was fighting against the will of Nigerians,” and he questioned whether the party considered itself superior to the people, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the party’s constitution.

Wike further criticized what he viewed as “Atiku’s political inconsistencies” and his determination to contest the 2023 presidential election, going against prevailing sentiments that the presidency should be rotated to the southern region.

An anonymous high-ranking PDP member disclosed that Wike’s boldness stemmed from the support he received from his allies within the party, particularly from NWC members. Some senior NWC members were reportedly collaborating with Wike to consolidate his influence within the party and obstruct Atiku and his associates. The source highlighted Wike’s instrumental role in the removal of the Uche Secondus-led NWC and the installation of the current committee, all driven by his desire to secure the PDP’s presidential ticket.

In response to Wike’s call for suspension, Pedro Obaseki, the Director of Research and Strategy for Atiku Abubakar’s campaign organization, asserted, “The party must call Wike to order.” He added a cautionary note, stating, “There is a limit to the continued brigandage of a man who should be grateful to God for all the benefits he has enjoyed in the party. Those whose palm kernels were cracked for them by benevolent spirits should not forget to be humble.
