Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has taken a firm and uncompromising stance against the continued enforcement of Monday sit-at-home, declaring that there will be “no going back” on the government’s decision to end the weekly shutdown. The declaration marks a significant escalation in the state government’s resolve to restore full economic activities and public confidence across Anambra.
Chukwuma Soludo Reaffirms Government’s Resolve to End Sit-at-Home
Governor Chukwuma Soludo made it clear that the Anambra State Government will no longer tolerate any form of enforced shutdown on Mondays. According to him, the sit-at-home practice has evolved from a protest tool into a crippling burden on the state’s economy and the everyday lives of citizens.
Soludo stressed that governance cannot be outsourced to fear or intimidation, noting that the primary duty of government is to protect lives, property, and livelihoods. He argued that allowing weekly shutdowns to persist sends the wrong signal about state authority and undermines confidence in public institutions.
The governor maintained that his administration has carefully assessed the economic and social costs of the sit-at-home and concluded that it does more harm than good. He insisted that Anambra must move forward and reclaim its reputation as a hub of enterprise, commerce, and resilience.
Economic Losses and Impact on Businesses Drive Soludo’s Position
Chukwuma Soludo highlighted the massive economic losses incurred every Monday as markets, banks, schools, and offices shut down across the state. He noted that traders, artisans, transport operators, and small business owners are the worst affected, losing critical income needed for survival.
According to the governor, the sit-at-home has disrupted supply chains, reduced productivity, and discouraged both local and foreign investors. Soludo warned that no serious economy can thrive when one working day is effectively erased every week due to fear-driven compliance.
He further explained that beyond financial losses, the policy has negatively affected education and healthcare services, as students miss classes and patients struggle to access medical facilities. Soludo argued that these long-term consequences threaten the social and economic future of the state if left unchecked.
Security Measures and Call for Public Cooperation
In addressing security concerns, Chukwuma Soludo assured residents that his administration is strengthening security architecture across Anambra State. He disclosed that security agencies have been directed to ensure the safety of citizens who choose to go about their lawful activities on Mondays.
The governor called on community leaders, traditional rulers, traders’ associations, and civil society groups to support the government’s decision and encourage residents to resume normal activities. He emphasised that collective courage and cooperation are necessary to break the cycle of fear.
Soludo concluded by reiterating that Anambra’s progress depends on unity, productivity, and the rule of law. With his “no going back” declaration, the governor signalled a decisive moment in the state’s governance, positioning economic revival and public confidence as top priorities for his administration.
