President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja on Monday, January 26, for an official state visit to the Republic of Türkiye, a trip aimed at consolidating and expanding diplomatic, economic, and strategic relations between Nigeria and the Eurasian nation. The visit forms part of Nigeria’s broader foreign policy agenda focused on economic diplomacy, global partnerships, and sustainable development cooperation.
According to official briefings, the state visit will prioritize strengthening bilateral ties in critical sectors including security, education, innovation, aviation, and social development. The engagement reflects Nigeria’s intention to leverage strategic international relationships to address domestic development priorities, enhance institutional capacity, and stimulate economic growth.
President Tinubu’s visit also signals continuity and renewed momentum in Nigeria–Türkiye relations, which have witnessed steady growth in recent years. The engagement is expected to reinforce political trust between both countries while opening new channels for long-term cooperation across government and private-sector platforms.
Building on Erdogan’s 2021 Visit and Expanding Strategic Cooperation
The upcoming visit builds on the foundation laid during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s landmark visit to Nigeria in 2021, which marked a turning point in bilateral engagement. Since then, both countries have pursued closer collaboration in trade, defence, infrastructure, and cultural exchange, supported by regular diplomatic consultations and sector-specific partnerships.
During President Tinubu’s visit, high-level bilateral talks are expected to focus on finance, trade, investment, communications, and technology transfer. These discussions aim to remove barriers to trade, encourage mutual investments, and align policy frameworks that support private-sector growth and innovation in both countries.
A major highlight of the visit will be the signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering energy development, scientific research, defence cooperation, media exchange, and institutional capacity building. These agreements are expected to formalize commitments, create implementation frameworks, and accelerate the delivery of mutually beneficial projects.
Business Forum, High-Level Delegation, and Nigeria’s Economic Diplomacy Push
As part of the state visit, a Nigeria–Türkiye business forum will be convened, bringing together investors, industry leaders, and policymakers from both countries. The forum is designed to promote direct business-to-business engagement, showcase investment opportunities, and foster partnerships in manufacturing, energy, aviation, construction, and digital innovation.
President Tinubu will be accompanied by senior government officials, including key ministers and top security chiefs, underscoring the strategic importance Nigeria attaches to the visit. Their presence is expected to facilitate sector-focused engagements, technical discussions, and follow-up mechanisms to ensure that agreements reached translate into measurable outcomes.
President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after the conclusion of the visit.
