The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially commenced a statewide electronic membership registration and revalidation exercise in Rivers State, targeting no fewer than six million new members. The initiative, which marks the first large-scale digital mobilisation by the party in the state, is aimed at expanding its political base and creating a reliable membership database ahead of forthcoming electoral activities. Party officials said the programme would run across the 23 local government areas with a special focus on youths, women, and professionals.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, leaders of the Rivers APC explained that the e-registration platform would allow intending members to enrol through mobile devices and accredited centres. The digital approach, they noted, would curb the long-standing problem of multiple registrations and conflicting membership lists that had previously weakened party administration. Ward executives and local coordinators have been mandated to supervise the process and ensure that every community is captured.
The party described the exercise as a major step toward repositioning the APC as a dominant political force in Rivers State. According to the state caretaker committee, the six-million target reflects the growing confidence of residents in the APC’s vision for good governance and economic recovery. The leadership urged party faithful to participate actively, stressing that the new register would determine voting rights and eligibility for future party programmes.
Digital Strategy to Strengthen APC Grassroots Structure
The Rivers APC said the adoption of an electronic registration model was part of a broader reform to modernise party operations nationwide. Officials disclosed that the platform has built-in verification features to authenticate personal data and prevent manipulation by rival interests. Registration centres have been opened in markets, tertiary institutions, motor parks, and community halls to make the process accessible to ordinary citizens.
Youth and women wings of the party have expressed strong support for the innovation, describing it as a gateway to inclusive participation. Leaders of the youth directorate stated that the e-registration would attract first-time voters and technology-driven entrepreneurs who had previously stayed away from partisan politics. They added that the process would also help identify credible delegates for internal primaries and leadership recruitment.
To ensure transparency, the APC announced that independent monitors and civil society observers would be invited to follow the exercise. Training sessions have been organised for registration officers on data protection and conflict management. The party maintained that the credibility of the register would restore discipline and reduce post-congress litigations that often arise from disputed membership figures.
Political Implications Ahead of Future Elections
Analysts believe the APC e-registration campaign could reshape the political landscape of Rivers State if successfully implemented. With the state historically dominated by opposition parties, the new drive signals the APC’s determination to challenge existing power structures through aggressive grassroots mobilisation. The six-million membership goal is being interpreted as a strategic move to build a formidable voting bloc before the 2027 election cycle.
Stakeholders, however, caution that the party must manage expectations and avoid internal rivalry that could undermine the exercise. Some community leaders have called for equitable distribution of registration centres and sensitivity to rural areas with poor internet connectivity. They advised the APC to complement the digital platform with offline options to prevent the exclusion of elderly supporters.
Despite the challenges, enthusiasm remains high among party loyalists who see the exercise as a rebirth of the APC in Rivers. Many believe that a credible and expansive membership register will enhance internal democracy and strengthen the party’s negotiating power at the national level. As the programme gathers momentum, attention will focus on whether the APC can translate registration numbers into real electoral influence.
