Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Former Jigawa State Governor and ex-Minister of Defence, has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting he is planning to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the claims as false, misleading, and politically motivated.
Badaru reaffirmed his loyalty to the ruling party, stressing that he remains a committed member of the APC and has no intention of abandoning the platform that brought him into national prominence.
The defection rumours, which circulated widely across social media platforms and some political circles, had claimed that the former minister was exploring alliances with opposition parties ahead of future political realignments. However, Badaru categorically denied these reports, stating that they were deliberately concocted to create confusion within the APC and undermine party unity at a critical time.
According to him, the APC remains the most viable political platform for delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians. He emphasized that internal disagreements within political parties are normal in a democracy and should not be misinterpreted as grounds for defection or disloyalty.
Badaru Describes Defection Claims as Baseless and Malicious
Speaking through close associates and party stakeholders, Badaru made it clear that he has not held discussions with any opposition party regarding defection. He described the rumours as “baseless fabrications” designed to score cheap political points and destabilize the APC’s internal cohesion, particularly in the North-West region where he commands significant political influence.
The former governor noted that such rumours often surface whenever political actors begin consultations or engage in party-wide discussions on governance, reforms, or future strategies. He urged the public and party supporters to rely only on official statements and credible sources rather than unverified online speculation.
Badaru also cautioned against the deliberate spread of misinformation, warning that it poses a serious threat to democratic stability. He reiterated that political discourse should be anchored on facts, ideology, and performance, not rumours intended to mislead the electorate.
APC Loyalty, Party Unity, and Future Political Engagements
Reaffirming his commitment to the APC, Badaru stated that he remains fully aligned with the party’s leadership and objectives at both national and state levels.
He stressed that his political focus is on strengthening the party, supporting its policies, and contributing to good governance rather than engaging in distractions fueled by speculation.Party insiders disclosed that Badaru continues to participate actively in APC consultations and strategy meetings, further debunking claims of an imminent defection. They described him as a stabilizing figure whose experience as a former governor and minister remains valuable to the party’s growth and electoral prospects.
As Nigeria’s political landscape gradually shifts toward future elections, analysts believe defection rumours involving high-profile politicians like Badaru are likely to persist. However, his firm denial sends a clear message that, at least for now, he remains firmly rooted in the APC, prioritizing party unity and political stability over opportunistic realignments.
