The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, former Imo governorship candidate Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and seven other members over alleged anti-party activities and gross violation of the party’s constitution. The National Working Committee (NWC) announced the expulsions on Friday after an emergency meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
According to the party, the decision followed months of internal review, petitions, and investigative reports detailing actions by the affected members that were deemed “highly prejudicial” to the stability, cohesion, and integrity of the PDP. The NWC explained that the expelled members allegedly worked against the party’s interests during the last general elections and continued to undermine party structures afterward.
The party leadership insisted that the disciplinary action became necessary to restore order and demonstrate that no member, regardless of status or influence, is above the party’s laws. The NWC stated that the PDP constitution remains the guiding framework for all members and must be respected to preserve internal demom
Party Claims Decision Is to Safeguard PDP Ahead of Future Elections
The PDP maintained that the expulsions were not driven by personal grievances or factional pressure but by the urgent need to safeguard the party from prolonged instability. According to the statement, the affected figures participated in actions considered inimical to the collective interest of the PDP, including publicly opposing party candidates, fraternizing with rival political groups, and engaging in conduct seen as weakening the party’s electoral fortunes.
The NWC warned that continued tolerance of indiscipline would erode public confidence, weaken party structures, and hamper preparations for upcoming elections. To this end, the party said decisive steps were unavoidable. It added that the party’s constitution clearly empowers the NWC to impose sanctions ranging from suspension to expulsion when members violate key provisions.
Insiders within the PDP believe the expulsions signal the beginning of a broader reorganization aimed at repositioning the party ahead of 2027. The NWC reportedly intends to enforce a stricter standard of loyalty while pushing for reforms to rebuild trust among grassroots supporters.
Expulsion Sparks Mixed Reactions Nationwide as Calls for Reconciliation Intensify
The expulsion of high-profile figures such as Fayose, Wike, and Anyanwu has triggered widespread reactions across the country. Supporters of the decision applauded the PDP for taking a bold step to enforce discipline, arguing that persistent internal sabotage has contributed to the party’s electoral setbacks. Many believe the move could strengthen the PDP by eliminating elements who allegedly worked against its unity.
However, critics warned that the expulsions could further fracture the party, deepen existing internal divisions, and drive away influential figures who command massive regional support. Some party elders have already called for caution, urging the NWC to consider reconciliation pathways rather than punitive measures capable of destabilizing the PDP during a crucial rebuilding phase.
Political analysts say the development marks one of the most consequential disciplinary actions in recent PDP history. They note that the expulsions could reshape political alliances, alter power dynamics within the opposition, and influence the strategic positioning of the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
