Sheikh Ahmad Gumi Warns: Nigeria Shouldn’t Bow to U.S. Intimidation Under Trump

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has issued a strong warning to the Nigerian government, urging it to take decisive diplomatic action against the United States if Donald Trump does not withdraw his recent military threat. Gumi described the statement attributed to Trump as “imperialist intimidation” aimed at undermining Nigeria’s independence and destabilizing West Africa. According to the respected Islamic cleric, no nation that values its sovereignty should tolerate threats or coercion from a foreign power, regardless of its military or economic strength.

Gumi emphasized that Nigeria must not be bullied into submission under any form of international pressure. He stressed that the country’s dignity and territorial integrity must come before foreign aid or strategic partnerships. “We cannot continue to act like a dependent state,” he said, adding that every sovereign nation has the right to resist external domination. His remarks have since ignited fresh debate over how Nigeria should redefine its foreign policy posture in light of rising global tension.

He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to issue an official statement that reaffirms Nigeria’s non-aligned stance and refusal to be intimidated by the West. Gumi’s comments have resonated widely among Nigerians who see the cleric’s call as a wake-up moment for Africa’s largest democracy to assert its voice on the global stage. Many analysts believe his position reflects growing frustration with the perceived one-sided nature of U.S.–Africa relations.

Gumi Calls for Bold Diplomatic Action and National Unity

Gumi further advised the Federal Government to summon the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria for an immediate explanation of Trump’s comments, saying silence would amount to weakness. He criticized Washington’s foreign policy, describing it as reckless and dismissive toward developing nations. According to him, any attempt by the United States to interfere in Nigeria’s domestic affairs or impose military conditions must be met with a firm and united response from all arms of government.

The outspoken cleric warned that Trump’s posture could destabilize peace and security in the West African sub-region if left unchecked. He argued that Nigeria’s strength lies in its ability to act as a moral and political leader for other African nations. “This is not a partisan issue,” Gumi stated, “it is a national matter that affects our pride, our independence, and our ability to determine our own destiny.” His words underscored the urgent need for national unity in confronting external threats.

He called on lawmakers, civil society organizations, and religious leaders to rally behind the government in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty. Gumi maintained that diplomatic retaliation may be necessary if the threats persist. This could include suspending defense agreements, reducing intelligence cooperation, and reassessing military partnerships with the United States. He said such measures, though tough, would demonstrate to the world that Nigeria cannot be coerced by fear or foreign influence.

Gumi Warns: “Nigeria Must Stand Tall or Lose Global Respect”

In his concluding remarks, Sheikh Gumi insisted that the Federal Government’s reaction to Trump’s threat will determine Nigeria’s global standing for years to come. He warned that weak or delayed action could portray the nation as submissive, diminishing its reputation among other African countries and global allies. “We must show that Nigeria is not a puppet state,” he declared, adding that silence would embolden aggressors and diminish the value of Nigeria’s voice in global diplomacy.

Gumi stated that the time had come for Nigeria to build stronger alliances within Africa and the Global South rather than relying excessively on Western influence. He noted that the international balance of power is shifting and that Nigeria must strategically position itself as an independent player capable of defending its own interests. His message was clear: respect in international politics is earned, not requested, and Nigeria must prove its worth through decisive action.

He concluded by urging President Tinubu to treat Trump’s threat as a national security and diplomatic issue that requires immediate attention. “If the U.S. does not retract, Nigeria must reconsider all forms of cooperation,” he said. “Our sovereignty is not for negotiation.” Gumi’s statement has since sparked discussions on social media and among policy experts, many of whom agree that Nigeria must reassert itself as a nation that commands respect, not one that bows to intimidation.
