Senate Approves Bernard Doro as Minister After Short Screening

The Senate has confirmed Bernard Doro as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria following a brief screening session lasting less than 30 minutes. Bernard Doro, who becomes the third ministerial nominee from Plateau State in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, pledged to build an inclusive and technology-driven humanitarian framework while enhancing cooperation among security agencies to better serve crisis-affected citizens.

Bernard Doro Outlines Humanitarian Vision

During his appearance before lawmakers, Bernard Doro emphasised his commitment to establishing a humanitarian ecosystem anchored on impartiality, independence, and national inclusiveness. He stressed that effective coordination remains essential to supporting vulnerable populations, particularly those affected by conflicts and emergencies across the country.

The nominee said synergy among security agencies is critical to accurately identifying and assisting individuals impacted by crises. He noted that challenges often arise due to fragmented communication and operational gaps, adding that his approach will focus on improving collaboration and information flow among relevant bodies.

Bernard Doro further highlighted the importance of technology in modern humanitarian response systems. According to him, digital tools will play a strategic role in targeting assistance, monitoring impact, and strengthening accountability mechanisms.

Senate Approval and Political Context

After a brief exchange with senators and a review of his qualifications, the upper chamber expressed satisfaction with Bernard Doro’s credentials and professional background. He was subsequently asked to “take a bow and go,” a gesture traditionally reserved for nominees deemed sufficiently qualified with minimal questioning.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Doro last week, filling the ministerial vacancy created by the resignation of Nentawe Yilwatda. Yilwatda, formerly Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, stepped down to assume his new position as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bernard Doro now joins the cabinet as the third minister from Plateau State, a development that underscores the state’s growing political footprint within the administration.
