Teju Babyface Encourages Nigerians: Success Isn’t About Location, It’s About Mindset

Popular Nigerian comedian and TV host Teju Oyelakin, widely known as Teju Babyface, has opened up about his relocation experience to the United States, describing it as one of the most challenging seasons of his life. Speaking in a recent video shared on his YouTube channel, Teju said he once regretted moving abroad, realizing that life overseas wasn’t as easy as people often imagine.

He explained that many Nigerians believe relocating automatically leads to success, but in reality, every country comes with its own struggles. “We all suffer from what I call the ‘grass is greener on the other side’ syndrome,” he said. “From where we stand, another place always looks better — greener, more promising. But we usually don’t see the challenges that come with it until we get there.”

According to him, the initial years in the U.S. were emotionally and financially draining, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I lived in that place for years. America has its own unique set of difficulties. When you add COVID to that, it was brutal. For about three years, I was convinced I’d made the biggest mistake of my life,” he said.

Grass Is Greener Syndrome Is Real’ — Teju Babyface Warns Nigerians Dreaming of Life Abroad

Teju Babyface cautioned Nigerians against assuming that relocation is a guaranteed ticket to a better life. He described the popular belief that opportunities abound effortlessly overseas as a dangerous illusion that often leads to disappointment.

“From afar, America looks like a dream — the cars, the systems, the economy. But when you get there, reality hits hard,” he said. The entertainer emphasized that adapting to a new environment takes time and comes with cultural shock, loneliness, and professional struggles.

He added that the emotional toll of starting afresh in a foreign country made him question his decision several times. “There were days I’d wake up and ask myself if I made the right move. It wasn’t about money — it was about identity and purpose,” Teju revealed, noting that success abroad requires the same level of hard work and consistency as it does back home.

Teju Babyface Encourages Nigerians to Find Fulfillment Wherever They Are

Despite his initial regrets, Teju Babyface said the experience taught him valuable life lessons about contentment, patience, and purpose. He advised Nigerians to think deeply before relocating and to focus on building value wherever they are, rather than constantly seeking greener pastures.

He explained that true success is not tied to location but to mindset and preparation. “You can succeed anywhere if you’re equipped and ready for the challenges that come with that environment,” he said. “Don’t move because everyone else is moving — move because you have a plan and a purpose.”

Teju concluded by urging Nigerians to stay hopeful and adaptable. “Fulfillment doesn’t always come from changing countries; sometimes, it comes from changing perspectives,” he said. His message has since resonated with many fans, sparking conversations about the realities of migration and the importance of self-awareness in chasing dreams.
