ADC Warns Federal Government Against Exploiting Alleged Coup Plot to Intimidate Opposition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned the Federal Government against using the recent reports of an alleged coup plot as a tool to suppress opposition voices or justify political intimidation.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said while it condemns any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s constitutional order, it remains deeply concerned about what it described as the “potential misuse of national security narratives” to silence dissent and manipulate public perception.

The ADC noted that democracy thrives on accountability and open debate, warning that any move to stifle opposition under the pretext of protecting the state would amount to a betrayal of democratic principles. The party urged the government to act responsibly by clarifying the true nature of the alleged coup and reassuring the public of its commitment to due process.

Conflicting Signals Raise Public Concern

According to the statement, the ADC expressed worry over inconsistencies in official communication regarding the alleged coup plot. It pointed out that the Defence Headquarters had denied any knowledge of such a plot, despite persistent media reports suggesting otherwise.

The party described these contradictions as “troubling,” arguing that they cast doubt on the credibility of the entire narrative. It added that the Federal Government’s continued silence has only fuelled speculation and distrust among citizens, thereby undermining public confidence in state institutions.

“The government’s reluctance to issue a clear statement allows the coup story to fester unnecessarily,” the ADC said. “Such ambiguity serves no national interest and risks being seen as a politically motivated tactic to divert attention from pressing governance issues.”

ADC Reaffirms Commitment to Democratic Order

Reiterating its stance, the ADC affirmed its opposition to all forms of dictatorship—military or civilian—and called on the Federal Government to desist from weaponising national security to target political opponents.

The party stressed that genuine national security concerns should be handled transparently, without infringing on citizens’ rights or eroding democratic freedoms. It added that any attempt to intimidate opposition voices would not only damage Nigeria’s image internationally but also weaken the foundations of its democracy.

“The government must not mistake criticism for disloyalty,” the ADC stated. “We support every legitimate action aimed at protecting Nigeria’s democracy, but we will resist any attempt to use the cloak of national security to suppress lawful political engagement.”
