Lagos State Wastewater Management Seals YABATECH Facility for Illegal Sewage Discharge

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed off the dysfunctional sewage and wastewater treatment facility of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) for allegedly discharging untreated effluent into the environment.
The Lagos State Wastewater Management noted that the enforcement action followed several written warnings to the institution, which went unheeded. Despite repeated notices and opportunities to rectify the violations, YABATECH reportedly continued to release raw sewage directly into the surroundings, contravening environmental protection standards.

The Lagos State Wastewater Management emphasized that the decision to seal the facility was taken to safeguard public health and restore environmental integrity, reiterating that no institution, public or private, is exempt from environmental compliance laws.

Lagos State Wastewater Management Begins Crackdown on Illegal Discharges

The Lagos State Wastewater Management stated that it frowns strongly at every act of illegal discharge of wastewater, describing it as a breach of the Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. According to the agency, such practices threaten water bodies, soil quality, and the general well-being of communities near affected areas.

The Lagos Wastewater Management warned that untreated sewage poses serious health hazards, including waterborne diseases, and contributes to the degradation of natural ecosystems. It reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment through strict monitoring, regulation, and enforcement of wastewater standards.
The Lagos Wastewater Management further disclosed that it will intensify routine inspections across public and private facilities to ensure compliance, adding that environmental negligence will not be tolerated under its ongoing #ZeroToleranceLagos campaign.

Lagos State Wastewater Management Begins Advocacy for Compliance and Sustainability

The Lagos State Wastewater Management also urged institutions, industries, and residential estate managers to adopt functional wastewater treatment systems in line with approved standards. It stressed that compliance with wastewater management laws is not merely a legal obligation but a civic responsibility towards public health and environmental sustainability.
The Lagos Wastewater Management reiterated its readiness to support compliant organizations through technical guidance and collaboration, but warned that erring entities would face sanctions, including sealing, fines, and possible prosecution. It reaffirmed that protecting the environment remains a shared duty that demands accountability from every stakeholder.
