Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has appealed to members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to lose faith in the face of recent defections, assuring them that the party’s current challenges are temporary and will ultimately strengthen its foundation for future victories.
Makinde made the remarks on Monday during the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Subcommittee in Abuja. The governor, who chairs the subcommittee, emphasized the importance of resilience and unity, noting that the PDP has survived tougher times in its political history.
Makinde stated that although several party figures had left for rival political platforms, this phase should be seen as a period of purification and renewal rather than decline. “It may appear that it’s getting worse,” Makinde said, “but usually, when you want something that will endure, it will get worse before it gets better.”
Defections Shake PDP Ahead of National Convention
The PDP has faced a wave of defections in recent months as the 2027 general elections draw closer. Prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and businessman Dele Momodu have reportedly joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition coalition.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has also attracted key PDP leaders, including Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and the party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa. Reports suggest that Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri may also defect before the PDP’s National Elective Convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Despite these developments, Makinde insisted that the PDP remains a nationwide movement rooted in every ward across Nigeria. Makinde assured party members that the defections would not erase the PDP’s political relevance or its mission to “rescue Nigeria.”
Makinde: ‘Hold Your Corner for PDP’
Encouraging steadfastness, Governor Makinde urged PDP supporters across the country to remain committed and proactive in rebuilding the party. He noted that the upcoming National Convention presents an opportunity to rejuvenate the PDP and enthrone credible leadership capable of steering the nation toward progress.
“I am holding my own corner,” Seyi said. “Trust the leadership we will enthrone, and play your part, no matter how small. Together, we will rebuild this party and restore the hope of Nigerians.”
He expressed optimism that the subcommittee’s work would ensure a smooth and well-organized convention in Ibadan, stressing that no role was too small in the party’s rebuilding process. Makinde concluded by reaffirming his belief that the PDP would emerge stronger and more united after its current trials.
