Nigeria Immigration Service Warns Overstayers: Fines, Deportation, and Bans Await
Nigeria Immigration Service Outlines Targeted Groups
Nigeria Immigration Service has announced that it will begin nationwide enforcement operations on October 1, 2025, against foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas or violated entry conditions.
NIS explained that the operation will apply to holders of expired Visa on Arrival (VoA), expired Single and Multiple-Entry Short Visit or Business Visas, as well as individuals with expired Comprehensive Expatriate Residence Permit and Automated Card (CERPAC).
NIS stressed that the crackdown is necessary to uphold immigration laws and prevent abuse of entry privileges across the country.
Nigeria Immigration Service Warns of Penalties
NIS stated that penalties for violations will include fines, deportation, and re-entry bans of varying durations. Offenders who overstay by less than three months may face removal from the country, a $15 daily fine, or a two-year ban from re-entry.
Nigeria Immigration Service added that overstays of three months to one year may result in deportation, continued fines, or a five-year entry restriction. Those exceeding one year face harsher measures, including deportation, a 10-year re-entry ban, or even permanent prohibition.
NIS emphasized that these penalties are in line with international standards for immigration control.
NIS Reiterates Commitment to Compliance
NIS reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring fairness while strictly implementing the directive. It advised foreign nationals to renew their permits promptly or depart the country before October 1 to avoid sanctions.
Nigeria Immigration Service also called on employers, companies, and institutions engaging expatriates to ensure compliance with the rules to avoid disruptions and legal complications.
NIS concluded that the enforcement drive demonstrates Nigeria’s determination to maintain order within its immigration system.
