End of Rivers Crisis: Governor Fubara Meets Tinubu After Six-Month Suspension Lif

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara yesterday evening held his first official meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following his reinstatement after a six-month suspension from office. The closed-door meeting, which commenced around 6:20 pm, marks a significant milestone in the resolution of the political crisis that engulfed Rivers State earlier this year

Governor Fubara, dressed in a white caftan and black cap, arrived at the seat of power shortly after President Tinubu had concluded separate meetings with several high-ranking officials, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq of Kwara State, and the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.

Governor Fubara:Political Reconciliation Takes Centre Stage

Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, Governor Fubara emphasized that political stability has fully returned to Rivers State. The governor Fubara described his visit as a “father-son discussion,” expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for his intervention in resolving the crisis that had paralyzed the state’s democratic institutions for six months.

“As far as I’m concerned, we have made peace. Fubara and his principal are working together,” the governor Fubara; declared when questioned about the authenticity of the reconciliation. He specifically mentioned his improved relationship with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, with whom he had been embroiled in a bitter political dispute over control of the state.

The meeting comes five days after President Tinubu officially lifted the state of emergency that had been imposed on Rivers State on March 18, 2025. The emergency rule had resulted in the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly, with retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas appointed as sole administrator to oversee the state’s affairs.

Path to Reconciliation and Future Prospects

The political crisis in Rivers State began months after Governor Fubara’s inauguration in May 2023, when he fell out with his predecessor and political mentor, Nyesom Wike, over the control of the state’s political machinery. The dispute subsequently spread to the State House of Assembly, creating a factional divide among lawmakers and paralyzing legislative activities.

President Tinubu’s intervention proved crucial in brokering peace among the warring factions. In June, the President facilitated a reconciliation meeting that brought together Governor Fubara, Minister Wike, and other key stakeholders, laying the groundwork for the eventual resolution of the crisis.

Governor Fubar used the opportunity to thank President Tinubu, whom he described as a father figure, for his role in restoring peace and democratic governance to Rivers State. The governor emphasized that his visit was primarily to inform the President of his resumption of duties and to seek guidance on avoiding future political crises in the state.
