Bilateral trade between China and Nigeria has recorded a significant boost, reaching $15.48 billion between January and July 2025, according to the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing. She described the development as evidence of the deepening economic ties between both countries and a sign of resilience amid global economic challenges.
Speaking on the growing partnership, Ms. Yan revealed that the trade figure represents a 34.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. She explained that Nigeria continues to play a pivotal role as China’s largest trading partner in Africa, with investments spanning infrastructure, manufacturing, power, and technology.
Expanding Cooperation Beyond Trade
The Consul-General stressed that while trade figures are important, China’s focus goes beyond numbers. She emphasized that several Chinese-backed projects in Nigeria—including railways, power generation facilities, and industrial zones—are designed to boost the country’s economic diversification and reduce dependence on oil exports.
Ms. Yan pointed out that initiatives under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) have provided Nigeria with new opportunities for connectivity and industrial expansion. She said the BRI framework ensures that both government and private-sector actors can engage in long-term, sustainable projects that foster inclusive development.
Nigeria as a Strategic Partner
Highlighting Nigeria’s significance, Ms. Yan Yuqing described the country as a strategic gateway for China’s economic engagement with Africa. With its vast population and dynamic market, Nigeria offers opportunities not just for trade but also for knowledge exchange and human capacity development.
She further noted that China is committed to supporting Nigeria’s development goals through skills transfer, vocational training, and financing for critical infrastructure. Beyond the economic sphere, Ms. Yan emphasized the importance of cultural and educational exchanges, which she said are vital for building trust and strengthening people-to-people relationships.
In conclusion, the Consul-General affirmed China’s readiness to consolidate its relationship with Nigeria, ensuring that the surge in trade volume translates into lasting benefits for both nations.
