Dangote Refinery Defends Workers' Voluntary Union Rights Amid NUPENG Dispute

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has categorically stated that trade union membership for its employees remains entirely voluntary, not mandatory, in strict adherence to Nigeria’s Constitution and International Labour Organisation conventions. The clarification comes as the company responds to what it terms “distortions of facts” by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) regarding workplace relations and union activities.

The refinery’s management emphasized its unwavering commitment to protecting employees’ fundamental rights to freely associate with legally recognized unions without interference or restriction. This statement addresses recent tensions that have emerged between the company and NUPENG over alleged practices that the union claims restrict workers’ rights to organize.

Dangote Company Dismisses Union Suppression Allegations

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has firmly rejected accusations that it forced drivers to sign contracts prohibiting union membership, describing such claims as completely unfounded and without merit. The Dangote company urged NUPENG to redirect its focus toward resolving internal disputes with its Petrol Tanker Drivers unit rather than involving the refinery in organizational conflicts that do not concern the company directly.

According to the Dangote refinery’s official statement, the allegations of union suppression represent part of a broader campaign designed to undermine progress in Nigeria’s private sector. The company maintains that these accusations are strategically timed to coincide with the refinery’s remarkable achievements in transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape and economic prospects.

The Dangote refinery stressed its exemplary track record of maintaining cordial and cooperative relationships with all recognized trade unions, including NUPENG itself. Management highlighted that the company has consistently supported legitimate union activities within its facilities, providing office space and enabling member engagement and dues collection without any form of interference or obstruction.

Economic Impact and National Development Initiatives

Dangote Industries Limited, which positions itself as Nigeria’s largest private-sector employer, has demonstrated its commitment to workforce welfare through comprehensive benefits packages that far exceed industry standards. Under the company’s new Compressed Natural Gas trucks scheme, drivers receive compensation packages three times above the national minimum wage, complemented by group insurance, pension plans, medical allowances, housing benefits, and access to loans.

The ambitious rollout of 10,000 CNG-powered trucks represents a transformative N720 billion investment that will create at least 60,000 direct jobs and generate numerous indirect employment opportunities across various sectors. This initiative forms part of the company’s broader strategy to reduce logistics costs, extend domestic refining benefits to rural communities, and support the Federal Government’s comprehensive energy transition plan.

Since the Dangote refinery’s commissioning one year ago, Nigeria has achieved a historic transformation from being Africa’s largest importer of refined fuel to becoming a net exporter, with products now reaching international markets including the United States. The facility produces valuable by-products such as polypropylene, base oils, and jet fuel, driving significant growth in plastics manufacturing, aviation fuel supply, lubricants production, and agro-processing industries. The Dangote Refinery reports that its operations have successfully eliminated recurring fuel scarcity, stabilized prices, and ensured the supply of high-quality fuel despite ongoing challenges from importers of substandard products.
