El-Rufai, Six ADC Leaders Summoned by Kaduna Police Over Conspiracy Allegations

El-Rufai, Six ADC Leaders Summoned by Kaduna Police Over Conspiracy Allegations

The Kaduna State Police Command has invited former governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, alongside six prominent leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), for questioning over allegations of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of public peace, mischief, and causing grievous bodily harm.
The letter of invitation, dated September 4, 2025, was signed by Uzairu Abdullahi, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). It directed the Kaduna ADC chairman to produce El-Rufai and six other members before the State CID on September 8 for interrogation.

The ADC members invited include Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (popularly known as “30”), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (alias “Mikiya”). Police authorities say the move is part of ongoing investigations into complaints lodged by undisclosed individuals.

Police Seal ADC Secretariat Amid Rising Tensions

Hours before the letter surfaced, security operatives sealed off the ADC’s state secretariat in Kaduna, located on Ali Akilu Road. The closure disrupted an expected solidarity visit by the party’s North-West leadership following violent clashes at an earlier ADC gathering.

Last Saturday, thugs wielding cutlasses, clubs, and stones invaded the inauguration of an ADC transition committee, leaving several people injured and damaging vehicles. The police later argued the event was staged without official notification despite repeated warnings. Critics, however, accused security agents of selective enforcement and inaction during the attack.

ADC officials insist the police are attempting to criminalise opposition politics in Kaduna, pointing to the forceful shutdown of their offices as evidence of bias and intimidation.

El-Rufai Condemns Crackdown as “Unconstitutional”

Reacting to the developments, Nasir El-Rufai described the police actions as unconstitutional overreach. Addressing journalists at his Kaduna residence, he revealed that the planned meeting at the ADC secretariat was meant for the North-West leadership to commiserate with members injured during the violent attack.

According to El-Rufai, the police commissioner claimed a court order prohibited the gathering but failed to present any documentation. “We have not seen the order. Even if such an order exists, it must be properly served on us. This has not been done,” he stated. He further accused the police of abusing their powers under political pressure, vowing to challenge any unlawful restrictions in court.

“As responsible leaders, we deferred to the commissioner of police to avoid confrontation. But this is not the end of it. We will demand to see the order, and we will challenge it up to the Supreme Court,” El-Rufai declared.

ADC Internal Fractures and State Government Warning

Amid the escalating row, Kaduna ADC officials have distanced themselves from El-Rufai’s involvement in the controversial inauguration of the transition committee. They described the process as unilateral, fraudulent, and destabilising, claiming it did not follow internal party consultations.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Government has accused El-Rufai of attempting to destabilise the state’s fragile peace. In a statement dated September 1, Dr. Shehu Shuaibu, Commissioner for Internal Security, warned that the former governor’s actions would be resisted. “Anyone who dares to threaten peace, be it Nasir El-Rufai or any of his accomplices, will be held accountable,” the statement read.

These divisions highlight the deepening cracks within the ADC in Kaduna and raise concerns about whether the party can withstand external pressure while managing internal disputes.

A Brewing Political Storm in Kaduna

The police invitation of El-Rufai and senior ADC figures marks an escalation of the political crisis gripping Kaduna. What began as a violent disruption of a party meeting has now snowballed into legal battles, accusations of selective policing, and widening rifts within the opposition.

With the September 8 deadline for questioning approaching, the political temperature in Kaduna continues to rise. Observers warn that the outcome of the investigation and El-Rufai’s response could significantly shape the opposition’s strength in the state ahead of future elections.

For now, Kaduna’s political climate remains tense, with the lines between law enforcement and politics increasingly blurred.
