Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Secures Commitment for Immediate Payment of Indigenous Contractors

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu began by acknowledging that the face-off between indigenous contractors and the Federal Government had reached a boiling point, threatening both economic stability and confidence in governance. For weeks, contractors had protested unpaid backlogs, stalling ongoing projects and raising fears of nationwide disruptions.

Benjamin Kalu emphasized that leadership must rise above partisan divides to resolve issues that directly affect national development. By cutting short legislative recess, he underscored the urgency of the matter and the need to prevent further damage to investor confidence in Nigeria’s infrastructure growth.

High-Level Dialogue Brings All Parties to the Table

Benjamin Kalu revealed that over 80 indigenous contractors attended the Abuja meeting, alongside the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Accountant-General, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi. He noted that the presence of such high-ranking officials reflected the seriousness with which the crisis was treated.

He explained that the dialogue lasted over four hours, where contractors openly voiced their grievances, and government officials outlined the challenges of delayed disbursement. According to Kalu, transparency in the discussions ensured that no party left the table feeling sidelined or ignored.

Commitment to Immediate Payments and Timelines

Benjamin Kalu stressed that one of the biggest achievements of the engagement was securing a clear and time-bound commitment for payments. He stated that starting Monday, contractors would begin receiving long-overdue funds for executed projects, ending months of uncertainty and financial strain.

He described the agreement as a major win not just for the contractors but also for the Nigerian economy, as delayed payments had crippled small and medium enterprises that depend on project execution. According to him, cash flow restoration in this sector will revive stalled projects and strengthen grassroots economies.

Contractors’ Trust Regained Through Parliamentary Intervention

Deputy Speaker Kalu argued that the intervention by the legislature proved that dialogue remains the most potent tool for conflict resolution. He maintained that without parliamentary involvement, the standoff might have escalated into industrial actions or lawsuits, which would have harmed governance and development.

Contractors, according to Kalu, left the meeting with renewed trust in both the parliament and executive arms of government. He stated that his committee will reconvene on September 21 to review progress, ensuring accountability and compliance with agreed timelines.

Finance Ministry’s Assurance and Public Expectations

Benjamin Kalu emphasized that Minister Wale Edun’s assurances were not vague promises but backed by a concrete roadmap. The Finance Ministry and the Accountant-General pledged an “orderly and systematic procedure” for clearing the backlog, with the Central Bank ready to release payments once the public holiday ends.

He added that while skepticism remains high due to past broken promises, the current framework provides a new sense of credibility. Citizens and stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether Monday’s deadline is honored, making this intervention a litmus test for government sincerity.

Benjamin Kalu’s Leadership Gains National Spotlight

Benjamin Kalu declared that the outcome of this crisis resolution would define how parliament is perceived under his watch as Chairman of the House Committee on Budget Implementation. He described his role not as a political performance but as a duty to Nigerians whose livelihoods are tied to government contracts.

He concluded by commending President Bola Tinubu for appointing diligent cabinet members who demonstrated humility during negotiations. However, Kalu noted that the real test of leadership lies in execution, not rhetoric, and urged both government and contractors to sustain the momentum of cooperation for Nigeria’s economic recovery.
