FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, speaking during a press briefing on Friday afternoon, dismissed the allegations of land allocation to his son as “malicious propaganda aimed at tarnishing his hard-earned legacy.” According to Wike, the reports are part of a wider political conspiracy orchestrated by those threatened by his reforms in the Federal Capital Territory.
Nyesom Wike emphasized that all land allocations under his leadership were executed within the legal framework of the Abuja Master Plan. “There’s no iota of truth in the claims. No land, not even one square meter, was allocated to my son Joaquin or any of my relatives,” he stated, adding that “due process was followed, and the records are there for scrutiny.”
Tinubu’s Office Confirms Probe Directive
President Bola Tinubu reportedly gave a direct order on Thursday night for an investigation into the alleged irregularities surrounding over 2,000 hectares of prime Abuja land purportedly allocated by Wike to his son. This followed widespread outrage triggered by an exposé published by The Peoples Gazette.
Presidency insiders revealed that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) will coordinate the investigation. However, uncertainty looms over whether the EFCC or ICPC will be brought into the process. “The president found the report concerning and has asked for an investigation to determine if there was any illegal enrichment,” said a senior aide who requested anonymity.
Public Outcry and Whistleblower Reactions Intensify
Nyesom Wike, while addressing the media, questioned the credibility of the whistleblower involved, asserting that “faceless informants cannot dictate national discourse.” Nevertheless, anti-corruption advocates are hailing the president’s response as timely and necessary for accountability in high office.
Civil society groups like SERAP and BudgIT have called for a transparent and independent investigation, insisting that the public deserves answers. The controversy has reignited discussions around nepotism, elite privilege, and the urgent need to reform Nigeria’s land allocation system in the FCT.
2000 Hectares: Land Value and Disputed Allocations
Nyesom Wike defended the FCTA’s land policies, stating that large allocations, including the disputed 2,000 hectares, were earmarked for infrastructural expansion and affordable housing schemes. However, insiders allege that satellite imagery and registry records point to a different narrative involving private transfers linked to family-controlled firms.
Experts have estimated the total land value at over $3.6 billion, citing its proximity to premium areas such as Maitama Extension and Katampe. Critics argue that such massive allocations without open bidding violate public trust and promote cronyism in land management.
Legal Experts Weigh In on Abuse of Office
Nyesom Wike, a seasoned lawyer, maintained that no legal line was crossed, asserting that “as Minister, I acted within the boundaries of the Land Use Act and the FCT laws.” However, legal scholars are split on whether ministerial discretion allows allocations of this magnitude to direct relatives without conflict of interest.
Constitutional lawyer Jibrin Okutepa (SAN) noted that even the appearance of impropriety could warrant prosecution. “The law abhors even the suspicion of self-dealing by public officers. If these allocations are confirmed, it could open the minister up to charges of abuse of office,” he said in an interview with Arise TV.
Political Implications and PDP’s Deafening Silence
Nyesom Wike, who famously defected to support Tinubu’s APC-led government despite his PDP roots, faces a precarious political situation. So far, the People’s Democratic Party has remained silent, likely wary of the internal turmoil the case might reignite within its ranks.
Analysts suggest that Tinubu’s swift order of an investigation may also serve to distance his presidency from allegations of favoritism toward loyalists. “This is a critical test of Tinubu’s anti-corruption stance,” said political strategist Remi Adebayo. “If he fails to act decisively, it could damage his reformist image irreparably.”
