President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a fresh directive to Nigeria’s security chiefs to immediately implement earlier instructions aimed at ending the protracted violence in Benue State. This comes on the heels of another round of reprisal attacks that have led to numerous fatalities and destruction in affected communities.
In a strongly worded statement, the President Tinubu described the killings as “inhuman and anti-progress,” adding that the bloodshed must not continue unchecked. Security operatives from the police, intelligence agencies, and military have already been deployed to the state to take charge of field operations and restore order. According to sources close to the presidency, these agencies have been instructed to carry out thorough investigations and apprehend all those responsible, regardless of their affiliations.
National Security Agencies Mobilized to Restore Sanity
The renewed deployment of security forces follows a presidential directive that specifically targets flashpoints in the Benue crisis, including areas frequently affected by farmer-herder clashes. Intelligence officers, senior police officials, and military commanders have reportedly begun joint operations aimed at neutralizing threats and dismantling criminal networks.
Residents of affected communities have expressed cautious optimism, hoping that the federal government’s renewed attention will yield tangible results. In the past, multiple peace initiatives and security operations have failed to curb the cyclical violence that has plagued the region for years. This time, however, the presence of top-ranking officers suggests a more aggressive and sustained approach may be underway.
Governor Alia Tasked with Leading Reconciliation Efforts
Alongside security measures, President Tinubu has directed Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State to immediately convene reconciliation meetings involving farmers, herders, and local community stakeholders. The President Tinubu emphasized that peace will only return to Benue when leaders at all levels act in unity and sincerity of purpose.
“This is the time for Governor Alia to act as a statesman,” President Tinubu said, “and immediately lead the process of dialogue and reconciliation that will bring peace to Benue.” He noted that no meaningful development can occur in an atmosphere of fear, mistrust, and continued violence, urging the governor to bridge divides and foster a new spirit of coexistence.
President Tinubu Call for Responsible Leadership and Community Engagement
President Tinubu also cautioned political and community leaders against making statements that could further escalate tensions. He stressed the importance of responsible leadership, urging all stakeholders to refrain from provocative language and inflammatory rhetoric, which he said have contributed significantly to the cycle of violence.
“Political and community leaders in Benue State must act responsibly,” he warned. “This crisis cannot be resolved through finger-pointing or careless speech. It requires humility, dialogue, and justice.” The President Tinubu called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society groups to actively support peace-building initiatives and ensure that all sides are represented fairly in discussions.
A National Test for Peace and Unity
The Benue crisis continues to test Nigeria’s resolve to maintain national unity amid its complex ethno-religious and socio-economic challenges. President Tinubu’s latest intervention is seen by many as a critical opportunity to reverse years of mistrust and insecurity that have crippled the state’s development.
Observers believe that the success of this renewed effort will depend on coordinated action, transparency, and sustained dialogue. As the nation watches closely, Benue stands at a crossroads: one path leads to continued strife, the other to peace. The federal and state governments, along with local actors, now have a shared responsibility to choose the latter — for the sake of the people and future generations.
