The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is currently engaged in high-level internal deliberations to determine its strategic direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to Ladipo Johnson, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, the leadership is weighing three main options: staying within the NNPP, forming a coalition with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition elements, or entering into an alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Johnson, who spoke in an interview with journalists, emphasized that discussions have been ongoing, albeit discreetly. “Yes, we are talking, and we’ve been talking,” he said. “But you’ll recall that at that time, I told you I didn’t want to mention specifically the groups or persons or movements that are in conversation with us. That is still the position now.”
Midterm Moment: A Pivotal Time for Political Realignment
The NNPP appears to be timing its decision to coincide with the midterm of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, a moment Johnson described as the traditional starting point for “proper politicking.” May 29, 2025, will mark two years into the current administration, providing a natural juncture for parties to reassess their positions and alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.
“In the NNPP, we tend to, at least from our own history as the Kwankwasiyya movement, wait till midterm. That is when we believe that proper politicking will commence,” Johnson stated. He indicated that this timing allows parties to observe the political terrain, gauge voter sentiments, and make informed strategic moves.
Political watchers see this approach as an attempt by the NNPP to maintain flexibility while quietly negotiating behind the scenes, a tactic that could prove pivotal in the fast-evolving Nigerian political space.
Speculations Around Kwankwaso’s Next Move: APC Alliance or Misinformation?
Recent media reports have fueled speculation that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s national leader and former Kano State governor, might be considering a return to the APC. Johnson, however, dismissed such claims as politically motivated propaganda pushed by those with vested interests.
“There have been many publications… insinuating that Senator Kwankwaso is moving to the APC, that it is imminent and all that. That is just the nature of the game,” he said. “Some people are pressing or pushing that narrative for their selfish reasons.”
While Johnson did not rule out any possibility, he maintained that no definitive decision has been made. “I am not saying any of these is the case now. But these are the three basic options that could happen,” he added.
Coalition Talks with Atiku and Opposition Forces: A Possible Power Bloc
One of the more intriguing options being considered is a coalition with Atiku Abubakar and other opposition groups. This could potentially create a formidable political force capable of challenging the dominance of the APC in 2027.
Though Johnson refrained from naming any specific individuals or groups involved in the ongoing conversations, the mention of Atiku suggests that discussions may be tilting toward a larger opposition realignment. Such a coalition could bring together the political machinery of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the grassroots appeal of the NNPP, and other third-force elements.
Analysts believe this option might be the most viable for the NNPP if it seeks to expand its national influence beyond its current regional strongholds, particularly in northern Nigeria.
The Road Ahead: NNPP’s Supporters Await Clarity on Political Direction
Despite the swirling speculations and ongoing strategic talks, the NNPP is yet to formally announce its position. Johnson assured that the party would make its intentions clear in due course. “Very soon, they will begin to hear from us. We will tell our supporters what we are doing,” he said.
For now, the party’s supporters and political observers alike remain in suspense, watching closely as the midterm milestone approaches. Whether the NNPP chooses to go it alone, merge into a broader opposition front, or align with the ruling APC, its decision will significantly shape the contours of Nigeria’s 2027 electoral battle.
Will the party stick with its original ideals or recalibrate its path for greater political survival? Only time will tell.
