Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed his commitment to building a formidable coalition aimed at ousting President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election. Speaking during a meeting with a delegation of National Opinion Leaders in Abuja on Wednesday, Atiku emphasized the need for unity among progressive forces across party lines to foster a new political era.
Taking to his verified X handle (formerly Twitter) after the meeting, Atiku described the coalition as a “fast-moving train with multiple stops,” ready to accommodate Nigerians of all political and social backgrounds. According to him, the goal transcends mere political victory, aiming instead to establish a system that prioritizes good governance and national development.
A Cross-Party Effort to Chart a New Path
Atiku revealed that leaders from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and other political organizations have agreed to form a coalition he termed Sabo Tafiya (New Path). He stressed that this coalition is not just about winning elections, but about laying the foundation for a better Nigeria.
“We have come together to say we are going to take a new path—a new pathway to a new Nigeria,” Atiku said. He stressed that the coalition would serve as a platform to address the challenges of poor governance, insecurity, economic hardship, and national disunity, which he claimed have worsened under the Tinubu administration.
PDP Governors Caution Against Merging, Insist on Party’s Strength
Interestingly, Atiku’s declaration comes amid warnings from PDP governors, who maintain that the party remains the “beautiful bride” of Nigerian politics. The governors argue that the PDP does not need to merge with other parties but should instead strengthen itself as the main alternative to the APC.
Despite the concerns raised by PDP leaders, Atiku appears confident that the coalition approach is the most viable strategy to defeat President Tinubu. He suggested that while the PDP’s strength is acknowledged, broader collaboration will maximize the chances of electoral success and ensure a more inclusive government.
Atiku’s Message to Nigerians: Reject Financial Inducements
In his address, Atiku urged Nigerians to resist the temptation of financial inducements from politicians, cautioning that accepting short-term gains could jeopardize their long-term future. He stressed that the electorate must remain vigilant and prioritize the well-being of future generations over immediate personal benefits.
“Don’t be disrupted by people giving you pennies or kobos here and there, and then abandon your future and your children’s future,” he warned. Atiku insisted that good governance could only be achieved if citizens made informed choices based on the character, competence, and integrity of candidates rather than financial gratification.
High-Profile Allies Signal a Serious Challenge for Tinubu
Atiku’s coalition has attracted a growing number of influential political figures, signaling a serious challenge to President Tinubu’s re-election ambitions. Notable allies such as former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and media mogul Dele Momodu have thrown their weight behind the movement, amplifying the momentum of the ‘New Path’ initiative.
Political observers note that the emerging coalition represents the most significant threat to Tinubu’s presidency yet. With widespread discontent over economic hardship, insecurity, and governance lapses, the 2027 election is shaping up to be a fiercely contested battle for the soul of Nigeria.
