The ongoing coroner’s inquest into the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, took a dramatic turn as auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe testified in the Ikorodu Coroner’s Court. Ogedengbe, who administered medical treatment to Mohbad on the day he died, provided a detailed account of his last moments, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Her testimony has sparked renewed public outrage, with many questioning the role of medical negligence, the handling of the emergency, and whether his death could have been prevented.
Urgent Medical Call: Responding to a Distressed Patient
According to Ogedengbe’s testimony, she was contacted by Ayobami Sodiq, popularly known as Spending, on September 12, 2023, to treat Mohbad at his Lekki residence. She arrived at the house around 2:30 p.m., where she was met with a distressing sight—Mohbad had a swollen cut on his right hand, allegedly sustained during an altercation with his friend, Primeboy.
To prevent infections, Ogedengbe decided to administer a tetanus injection in his upper arm. She further noted that Mohbad appeared weak but was still responsive at that point. However, his condition would soon take a turn for the worse following further treatment.
Pain Management and Injection Administration
Given Mohbad’s medical history, which included stomach ulcers, Ogedengbe explained that she carefully avoided diclofenac, a common painkiller known to cause complications in ulcer patients. Instead, she opted for a 4ml dose of paracetamol, which she diluted before administering.
To combat potential infections, she also prepared a 10ml dose of ceftriaxone, an antibiotic commonly used for bacterial infections. However, as she injected the ceftriaxone, Mohbad began to show signs of an adverse reaction, a moment that would later prove critical in the chain of events leading to his tragic demise.
Adverse Reaction: Signs of a Medical Emergency
Ogedengbe recounted that as soon as the ceftriaxone injection was administered, Mohbad developed goosebumps, started vomiting, and appeared extremely restless. Concerned by the sudden change in his condition, she immediately alerted his wife, Omowunmi, who, according to her, reassured her that Mohbad often reacted this way to injections.
Despite this assurance, Ogedengbe remained uneasy, noting that Mohbad’s reaction seemed more severe than a typical side effect. As his condition worsened, she realized that further intervention was necessary. She then sent someone to buy hydrocortisone, a drug used to manage allergic reactions and severe inflammation, hoping it would help reverse his deteriorating state.
Critical Condition: Desperate Attempts to Stabilize Him
As time passed, Mohbad’s symptoms intensified, and his breathing became increasingly labored. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Ogedengbe, along with other people present, attempted to stabilize him by administering a saline infusion to help with hydration and circulation.
However, Mohbad was becoming less responsive, and panic began to set in. A decision was made to rush him to a hospital, but there was no immediate access to a car. In a desperate bid to save him, they opted to transport him on a motorcycle to a nearby medical facility, hoping that emergency care could still turn the situation around.
Tragic End: Mohbad Pronounced Dead
Despite their efforts to rush him to a hospital, Mohbad was declared dead on arrival. His sudden and unexpected death shocked everyone present, and the circumstances surrounding it immediately raised suspicions of medical negligence and possible malpractice.
Authorities launched an investigation, with Ogedengbe’s role in his treatment coming under intense scrutiny. Many questioned whether the correct medical procedures were followed, especially considering his allergic reaction and the delay in seeking professional medical attention.
Legal Scrutiny: Investigations and Public Outcry
Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command and other regulatory bodies began examining the series of events that led to his demise. The use of ceftriaxone without proper allergy testing and the delay in hospitalizing him after the reaction have been key points of concern.
An autopsy and toxicology report were conducted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), with findings suggesting that Mohbad may have suffered anaphylactic shock, a fatal allergic reaction to the administered drug. The coroner’s inquest is now tasked with determining if his death was preventable and whether Ogedengbe acted negligently.
Meanwhile, fans, colleagues, and the general public have continued to demand justice, with the hashtag #Justice4Mohbad trending across social media platforms. Many believe that if better medical attention had been provided sooner, Mohbad might still be alive today.
