PDP Crisis: Battleground Shifts to Courtrooms as Leadership Tussle Intensifies

The leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a legal dimension as the party’s embattled National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, seeks to overturn his removal through the judiciary. Anyanwu has filed a motion for a stay of execution at the Court of Appeal to prevent the enforcement of a prior ruling that upheld his removal from office.

The Appeal Court sitting in Enugu had on December 20, 2024, affirmed the High Court’s decision, replacing Anyanwu with Sunday Ude-Okoye as the PDP’s rightful National Secretary. However, Anyanwu, determined to retain his position, filed an appeal challenging the decision while also requesting that the ruling not be executed until a final verdict is reached. Legal analysts believe today’s ruling on his motion will be pivotal in determining the party’s leadership direction.

A fresh controversy has emerged within the PDP over the selection of the party’s legal team for the case. The acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, an ally of Anyanwu, appointed Dr. J.Y. Musa, SAN, as the party’s legal counsel. However, this move has sparked resistance from a majority of the National Working Committee (NWC) members, who claim the appointment was made unilaterally.

Of the 17 members of the NWC, 11 have openly disowned both Damagum and Anyanwu, insisting that the decision to engage external legal representation was taken without consultation. They argue that the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN, was sidelined, further deepening divisions within the PDP’s leadership. This discord highlights the ongoing power struggle within the party, raising concerns about its stability ahead of upcoming elections.

Conflicting Letters Deepen Party Rift

The infighting within the PDP escalated when conflicting letters were sent regarding the party’s stance on the case. Damagum, in a letter dated December 20, 2024, officially appointed Dr. J.Y. Musa, SAN & Co., as the legal representatives of the party in the Supreme Court appeal, citing authorization from both the NWC and the National Executive Committee (NEC). However, this claim was swiftly countered by senior NWC members who wrote a separate letter to the President of the Appeal Court, distancing the PDP from Anyanwu’s legal battle.

Key party officials, including Deputy National Chairman (South) Amb. Taofeek Arapaja, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and National Treasurer Alhaji Yayari Ahmed, refuted Damagum’s claim. They maintained that the party had not authorized Anyanwu’s appeal, further exposing the factionalism within the party’s top hierarchy. This move indicates that a significant portion of the leadership does not recognize Anyanwu’s bid to reclaim his position.

Implications for PDP’s Stability and 2027 Elections

The ongoing legal battles and internal divisions threaten to destabilize the PDP as it prepares for future elections. Analysts warn that the infighting could weaken the party’s chances in upcoming electoral contests, as internal conflicts often lead to loss of public confidence and defections. The current crisis mirrors previous leadership tussles that have plagued the PDP, affecting its electoral performance in key states.

With the Appeal Court’s ruling on Anyanwu’s motion expected today, the decision could either resolve the conflict or deepen the crisis further. If the court rules in his favor, it may embolden his faction, leading to a prolonged legal showdown. Conversely, an unfavorable ruling for Anyanwu could pave the way for new leadership alignments within the party. Either way, the PDP finds itself at a crossroads, with its internal crisis threatening its unity and electoral prospects.

Calls for Reconciliation and Strategic Rebuilding

With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, stakeholders within the PDP are calling for urgent reconciliation and strategic rebuilding. Many believe that party leaders must set aside personal interests, make necessary sacrifices, and rally together to strengthen the PDP’s electoral prospects.

The growing concern is that if the PDP fails to resolve its internal conflicts, the APC could entrench itself as Nigeria’s dominant political force, potentially undermining democratic competition. To prevent this scenario, PDP leaders must forge a united front, restructure the party, and refocus on presenting a credible alternative to Nigerians in the next election cycle.

The PDP’s internal crisis, now playing out in courtrooms, is a defining moment for Nigeria’s opposition politics. As the Appeal Court prepares to rule on Anyanwu’s motion, the outcome will either escalate or de-escalate the leadership tussle. However, for the PDP to remain relevant in Nigeria’s political landscape, internal cohesion and strategic realignment must take precedence over factional battles
