Tinubu described General Yakubu Gowon as a “gentleman extraordinaire,” praising his leadership and lasting influence on the country.

Highlighting his personal relationship with the former head of state, President Bola Tinubu noted that since assuming office in May 2023, he has valued General Yakubu Gowon’s counsel, particularly during diplomatic tensions with Sahelian countries. President Tinubu’s two-page tribute emphasized General Yakubu Gowon’s role in fostering peace post-civil war and credited him with laying the foundation for Nigeria’s infrastructure development. “His philosophy of ‘No victor, no vanquished’ helped heal the nation,” President Tinubu remarked, adding that Gowon’s establishment of ECOWAS in 1975 remains one of his most remarkable legacies.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also joined in the celebration, hailing Yakubu Gowon as a statesman whose contributions to Nigeria should be recognized while he is alive. In a lighthearted moment, Obasanjo quipped, “God has made you a big 90. If I were from Calabar, I would say, ’90 no be yoke.’”

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who chaired the celebration, reflected on Gowon’s enduring influence, particularly his emphasis on community values and respect for authority. Other prominent figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, joined in acknowledging Gowon’s efforts toward maintaining peace and unity in Nigeria. Jonathan noted Gowon’s role during the civil war, praising his continued commitment to national reconciliation and stability long after his tenure as head of state.

Atiku highlighted the significance of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as one of Gowon’s enduring legacies, aimed at fostering unity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. He described Gowon as a “refined and uncontroversial public figure” whose contributions to national integration cannot be overstated. According to Atiku, “healing the wounds of the civil war through national reconciliation was one of General Gowon’s greatest and indelible achievements.”

From Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang also added his voice to the chorus of praises, acknowledging Gowon’s leadership in maintaining Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty. Mutfwang described Gowon as an “iconic statesman” whose commitment to a unified and peaceful Nigeria has left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari joined other dignitaries in celebrating Gowon, praising his visionary leadership and dedication to Nigeria’s future. Buhari lauded Gowon’s farsightedness, which helped lay the groundwork for the nation’s continued development and stability. These tributes highlight General Gowon’s enduring legacy as one of Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen, revered for his leadership during times of war and peace.
