Obi Seeks Broad Opposition Alliance to Confront Nigeria’s Deepening Challenges

A former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for a united opposition front to address Nigeria’s mounting economic and security concerns, warning that the country is at a critical juncture that demands coordinated action beyond political rhetoric.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi highlighted worsening insecurity, rising unemployment, economic hardship, and declining public trust as urgent issues requiring collective leadership. His appeal comes amid renewed political realignments within opposition ranks, which many observers see as early groundwork for the 2027 general elections.

Growing Calls for Opposition Unity

Obi’s remarks follow the recent defection of former Kano State governor and presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The move, formalised in Kano, drew the presence of prominent political figures, including the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, alongside other influential opposition leaders.

The development is widely interpreted as a significant boost for the ADC and part of broader efforts to consolidate opposition forces. Political analysts suggest that such alignments could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general elections, especially as calls for collaboration intensify.

Obi, who confirmed that he visited Kano at Kwankwaso’s invitation, described the defection and ongoing consultations as a meaningful step toward strengthening democratic processes. He stressed that unity among opposition actors is essential to building a credible alternative capable of addressing the nation’s pressing challenges.

Beyond Elections: Rebuilding Institutions

While acknowledging the importance of electoral success, Obi emphasised that the ultimate goal extends far beyond winning political office. According to him, the country’s current situation requires a deliberate focus on rebuilding institutions, restoring public confidence, and ensuring effective governance.

He urged political leaders to rise above ethnic, religious, and regional divisions, arguing that such differences have historically hindered national progress. Instead, he advocated for a political culture anchored on competence, integrity, and commitment to national development.

Obi further noted that the challenges facing Nigeria demand sacrifice, courage, and selflessness from leaders. He maintained that only disciplined leadership and genuine collaboration can reverse the country’s current trajectory and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.

Obi Call for Collective National Effort

Extending his appeal beyond political elites, Obi called on all Nigerians to prioritise national interest and support efforts aimed at fostering unity. He argued that meaningful change cannot be achieved without widespread participation and a shared vision for the country’s future.

He reiterated that insecurity, economic instability, and unemployment are interconnected issues that require coordinated solutions. In his view, fragmented approaches and partisan divisions will only prolong the nation’s struggles.

As political realignments continue to unfold, Obi’s call underscores a growing recognition among opposition figures that collaboration may be key to addressing Nigeria’s complex challenges and strengthening its democratic institutions.
