Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi, the traditional ruler of Owa-Onire in Kwara State, has abandoned his palace following a wave of violent attacks that have shaken his community. The monarch is currently taking refuge on the outskirts of Ilorin, citing grave concerns over his safety and that of his people.
Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi explained that the decision to leave his palace was driven by persistent threats from armed groups who have repeatedly targeted the area. According to him, the frequency and intensity of these attacks have made it impossible to continue residing within the palace premises without adequate protection.
The situation underscores the growing security challenges confronting rural communities in Kwara State. With traditional rulers like Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi now directly affected, concerns are mounting over the weakening of grassroots leadership structures and the broader implications for local governance.
Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi Recounts Palace Invasion and Kidnapping Ordeal
Detailing the most recent incident, Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi narrated how armed attackers stormed his palace on December 31, 2025, in a terrifying late-night raid. He disclosed that eight assailants forcefully broke through the palace gates and doors, gaining entry with little resistance due to the absence of adequate security.
During the invasion, Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi said the attackers confiscated his phone, that of his Olori, and cash at gunpoint. Although he was not abducted during this particular incident, the attackers took away two palace aides, leaving the royal household in fear and uncertainty.
Fabiyi also recalled a previous kidnapping in which he was held captive for seven days before regaining freedom after a ₦5 million ransom was paid by his community. He suggested that this past experience may have influenced the attackers’ actions during the latest raid, revealing a disturbing pattern of repeated targeting.
Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi Refuses Return Without Security Assurance
Firm in his stance, Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi has declared that he will not return to his palace until meaningful security measures are implemented. He lamented the lack of a functional police station in Owa-Onire and criticized the weak security presence that has left the community exposed to criminal elements.
Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi called on government authorities and security agencies to urgently address the crisis, warning that continued inaction could lead to further displacement and erosion of traditional authority. He stressed that rural communities must not be abandoned in the face of escalating violence.
Despite his temporary relocation, Fabiyi affirmed his dedication to his people, noting that he continues to perform his traditional duties remotely. However, he emphasized that insecurity is spreading to neighboring communities, making a comprehensive and sustained security response more urgent than ever.
