FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has delivered a brutally confident assessment of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential contest, telling opposition politicians to “start crying now” because, in his view, they cannot defeat President Bola Tinubu.
Wike made the declaration while discussing the country’s political landscape and the strength of the opposition ahead of the 2027 general election. He argued that the opposition is divided and lacks the political structure required to mount a serious challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Nyesom Wike Says Opposition Is Already in Trouble
According to Nyesom Wike, the 2027 presidential election will be easier for Tinubu than the 2023 contest. He maintained that the political circumstances have changed significantly, giving the president a stronger position going into the next election.
Wike’s message to the opposition was anything but subtle: prepare for defeat early. In his political calculation, opposition politicians may want to stock up on handkerchiefs because, by the time the ballots are counted, there may be plenty of reasons to cry.
The minister also pointed to divisions within opposition ranks, arguing that political parties and groups seeking to challenge Tinubu have yet to demonstrate that they possess the unity and nationwide structure necessary to defeat the incumbent.
Tinubu Gets Wike’s Vote of Confidence
Nyesom Wike has increasingly presented President Tinubu as a politician facing no formidable opposition ahead of 2027. His comments come as opposition politicians continue efforts to build alliances and create a platform capable of challenging the APC.
The political irony has not escaped observers. Wike was previously one of the PDP’s most influential figures and a fierce critic of the APC. He is now serving as a minister under Tinubu and is confidently predicting that the president will defeat the opposition.
Still, Wike’s prediction is not an election result. Nigerian politics has repeatedly demonstrated that political calculations can change quickly, especially before a presidential election. Opposition parties still have time to reorganise, build alliances and present a strong alternative to voters.
Wike’s latest declaration has added more fuel to the already heated 2027 political conversation. His message is simple: the opposition should start crying now because, according to him, Tinubu cannot be defeated. Whether Wike’s confidence becomes political prophecy or simply another famous campaign-season prediction will ultimately be decided by Nigerian voters.
