The game of hide-and-seek don enter another level as NDLEA Dragnet reportedly catch 52-year-old Festus Ibewuike, also known as Chidibest Ibewuike, over alleged connection to a 49.70kg heroin consignment seized at Lagos airport. According to authorities, the suspect wey allegedly disappear after the 2024 seizure don return to Nigeria to face the weight of the law.

The original matter reportedly started in February 2024 when NDLEA officers intercepted 49.70kg of heroin hidden inside cartons containing metal-cutting machines at the cargo terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. The agency described the seizure as the largest single heroin interception recorded at the airport.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, authorities later identified Ibewuike as a person allegedly linked to the consignment. The agency said after efforts to locate him, intelligence suggested he moved to Mozambique, where he operated a hotel business while allegedly avoiding arrest.
The NDLEA Dragnet eventually extended beyond Nigeria as collaboration between Nigerian and Beninese INTERPOL bureaux reportedly led to his arrest at an airport in Cotonou on September 2, 2026. He was later handed over to Nigerian authorities and brought back to face prosecution.
NDLEA Dragnet Highlights Growing Fight Against International Drug Networks
Beyond the drama of one suspect’s arrest, the case reflects the wider challenge facing countries battling international drug trafficking networks. Criminal groups often exploit borders, businesses, and transportation systems to move illegal substances, making cooperation between countries a major tool in investigations.
The NDLEA Dragnet operation also shows how agencies rely on intelligence gathering, surveillance, and international partnerships rather than only physical enforcement. The agency said Ibewuike was taken to its Central Exhibit Store in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he allegedly identified parcels connected to the seized heroin.
However, legal experts note that allegations remain allegations until proven in court. The suspect had earlier been charged in absentia before the Federal High Court in Lagos after authorities were unable to apprehend him at the time.
