LASUTH don enter fresh serious wahala as family of 59-year-old Adegoke Mosekola Dorcas demand N500 million compensation over her death, alleging medical negligence and wrongful administration of Vecuronium at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. Dorcas died on January 24, 2024, after undergoing treatment at the hospital, but nearly three years later, her family has reopened the matter with a formal legal demand. The allegation remains a matter for legal determination, while LASUTH says its legal department is handling the case.
LASUTH Faces Questions Over Alleged Vecuronium Administration
According to the family’s lawyers, Dorcas underwent a right adrenalectomy on January 11, 2024, and initially suffered a major complication during the operation involving bleeding and cardiac arrest. The family said she was subsequently managed in the ICU and later moved to the surgical ward, where they alleged that her condition improved significantly. They further claimed that by January 16, she had regained consciousness and had reportedly been considered fit for discharge.
The lawyers alleged that later that evening, a nurse administered Vecuronium, identified in the documents as Neovec-10, through an arterial line. The family claimed they were told the injection was an antibiotic, after which Dorcas reportedly developed severe difficulty breathing, seizures and cardiac arrest. She was then returned to the ICU, placed on mechanical ventilation and treated, but the family said she later suffered hypoxic brain injury before her death on January 24.
LASUTH Post-Mortem Report Becomes Key Part of Family’s Case
One major document mentioned in the family’s demand is a LASUTH post-mortem report signed by Consultant Pathologist Dr D.A. Sanni. According to the report cited in the lawyers’ letter, the recorded causes of death included hypoxic brain injury, cerebral oedema, adverse drug reaction and bronchopneumonia. The report also reportedly documented other medical findings and stated that toxicology samples were retained.
The family’s lawyers are demanding N500 million compensation, a formal apology and copies of LASUTH’s internal investigation reports, panel findings and any petitions sent to relevant medical regulatory bodies. They reportedly gave the hospital 30 days to respond and warned that legal proceedings could follow at the Lagos State High Court. The lawyers also said previous payments made by the hospital, including burial assistance, did not amount to a settlement or waiver of the family’s legal rights.
The case therefore don move beyond ordinary family complaint enter serious legal territory, where medical records, internal investigations, expert evidence and due process fit determine exactly what happened. LASUTH Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, has reportedly confirmed that the matter has been referred to the hospital’s legal department.
For now, the LASUTH matter remains an allegation and compensation demand, not a final court finding that the hospital or any individual is legally responsible for Dorcas’ death. But with the family demanding N500 million and threatening further legal action, the next stage of the matter could bring more documents and explanations into the open. OGM News Pidgin go continue to follow the case as LASUTH’s legal response and any subsequent court or regulatory proceedings emerge.
