Kingsley Chinda, Wike's ally Emerges APC Governorship Candidate in Rivers State

Kingsley Chinda, Wike’s ally has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, in what many political observers are already describing as another major victory for the political camp of Nyesom Wike. Chinda, a longtime ally of the former Rivers governor and current FCT minister, secured the party’s ticket following the APC governorship primary held on Thursday.

The development comes after a series of dramatic withdrawals by other aspirants, effectively clearing the path for Chinda’s emergence as consensus candidate. The outcome has further intensified discussions about Wike’s growing influence over political structures in Rivers State, despite his formal position within the federal government.

Rivers APC

According to reports from the APC primary election, Kingsley Chinda was returned unopposed after several key aspirants stepped down from the race before the final vote. Among those reportedly withdrawing were Siminalayi Fubara, former APC governorship candidate Tonye Cole, and George Kelly.

Chinda, who previously served as Minority Leader in Nigeria’s House of Representatives under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, had recently aligned with the APC political structure linked to Wike’s camp. His screening and eventual emergence had been widely anticipated by political insiders in Rivers State.

The Rivers APC primary has drawn national attention because of the prolonged political tensions involving Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Their rivalry over control of the state’s political machinery has dominated Rivers politics for several years, creating deep divisions within both the PDP and APC structures.

Wike Influence

Political analysts say Chinda’s emergence represents a major consolidation of influence for Nyesom Wike ahead of the 2027 governorship election. Reports indicate that many of the APC structures in Rivers State are now aligned with figures loyal to the FCT minister, despite his official membership history within the PDP.

Observers also note that the withdrawals preceding the primary have fueled speculation about behind-the-scenes negotiations and strategic political arrangements designed to avoid a divisive contest. Critics argue the process appeared heavily influenced by existing power blocs, while supporters insist consensus arrangements help maintain party unity before major elections.

The emergence of Chinda may also reshape the wider political landscape in Rivers State, particularly if dissatisfied factions decide to defect or form new alliances ahead of the governorship election. Analysts believe the APC primary outcome could trigger fresh realignments among influential political actors across the South-South region.

For now, attention remains fixed on how rival camps within Rivers politics will respond to Chinda’s emergence and whether the APC can maintain unity after the highly sensitive primary process. OGM News Nigeria understands that consultations and strategic meetings among party stakeholders are expected to intensify in the coming weeks as preparations for the next phase of the Rivers governorship battle begin.
