Kara Bridge Traffic Crash Worsens Ongoing Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Gridlock. Motorists and commuters on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reportedly endured more than 14 hours of gridlock on Tuesday after a multiple-vehicle crash at Kara Bridge collided, quite literally, with ongoing repair works and turned an already difficult traffic situation into a roadside endurance contest. According to information from our source, the crash involved seven vehicles and occurred in the early hours of the day, initially disrupting movement towards Ogun State before the resulting congestion spread beyond the Long Bridge towards Magboro and deep into Lagos. The situation was so severe that some motorists reportedly began treating the expressway like a parking lot with engines attached.
The latest incident came against the backdrop of ongoing repairs to damaged expansion joints on the Kara Bridge. The Federal Government began the current repair exercise on September 8 and said the work was expected to last two weeks, until September 22, with the affected section being handled in phases to limit disruption. Authorities had already warned motorists to expect delays and consider alternative routes where possible.
Kara Bridge Traffic: Motorists Entered the Expressway and Forgot Their Return Date
The crash reportedly created an immediate obstruction on the already restricted corridor, leaving motorists heading towards Ogun State trapped in a rapidly expanding queue. Our source said motorists travelling from Lagos were already encountering serious delays by 7am, while the congestion worsened throughout the day and eventually stretched towards Magboro and into Lagos.
There is little mystery about why the situation escalated so quickly. Recent reports have documented how the Kara Bridge repairs reduced available road space and produced lengthy delays, with traffic previously stretching from Kara towards the 7Up Junction and beyond. On September 15, another container truck crash at the Kara Bridge exit reportedly compounded traffic while repair work was still ongoing.
Kara Bridge Traffic Turns Into Battlefield After Seven-Vehicle Crash
As patience disappeared from the road faster than available lanes, some motorists reportedly drove against traffic in an attempt to escape the gridlock. Unfortunately, the attempted escape reportedly created another bottleneck for vehicles moving towards Lagos, proving once again that on Nigerian roads, one person’s shortcut can become another person’s traffic problem.
The authorities have repeatedly warned motorists against driving against traffic, particularly around the Kara Bridge repair zone. The Federal Road Safety Corps previously cautioned road users against such manoeuvres, while traffic-management agencies have continued deploying personnel to regulate movement around the corridor. Recent reports also indicate that emergency and traffic agencies have been involved in clearing crashes and managing congestion around the bridge.
For commuters, however, the practical question remains painfully simple: when exactly does a journey stop being a journey and become temporary accommodation? With repair works still ongoing and the Kara axis remaining vulnerable to crashes and traffic build-up, motorists may need considerably more patience, careful route planning and strict compliance with traffic instructions.
