Ekiti Election: ‘New Dawn’ Promise Sparks Fierce Clash as PDP Challenges APC’s Performance Record

The Ekiti Election has entered a critical phase after Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate Dr. Wole Oluyede confidently declared that he would emerge victorious in the June 20 poll, presenting himself as the leader capable of delivering a “New Dawn” for the state. His bold declaration comes amid growing political exchanges between the opposition and the ruling All Progressives Congress, turning the contest into a referendum on governance, development and public trust. As campaign rhetoric intensifies, voters are being asked to decide whether continuity or change offers the better path forward.

Ekiti Election Battle Intensifies as PDP Rejects Vice President’s Assessment

According to the Wole Oluyede Campaign Organisation, the Ekiti Election presents an opportunity for residents to evaluate the performance of the current administration and determine whether it deserves another term. The campaign argues that despite increased government revenues and federal allocations, the level of development experienced by ordinary citizens has fallen below expectations.

The opposition also challenged recent praise offered to Governor Biodun Oyebanji by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the inauguration of the Ado Ekiti flyover project. Campaign officials questioned why the project required several years to complete and alleged that many residents have yet to experience significant improvements in their daily lives. The campaign further accused the administration of relying on last-minute empowerment programmes and financial incentives as the election approaches.

Ekiti Election Heats Up as PDP and APC Trade Performance Claims

Beyond the immediate campaign exchanges, the Ekiti Election has been shaped by months of political and legal developments. Earlier disputes surrounding the PDP governorship ticket generated uncertainty within the opposition camp. However, court rulings ultimately affirmed Oluyede’s candidacy, and the Independent National Electoral Commission subsequently listed him as the party’s official candidate for the June 20 election.

Recent statements by Oluyede have also emphasized that endorsements from political leaders and influential figures will not determine the outcome of the election. The PDP candidate has repeatedly argued that the electorate, rather than elite political interests, will have the final say. Meanwhile, supporters of Governor Oyebanji continue to point to infrastructure projects and endorsements from prominent political figures as evidence that the administration has earned public confidence ahead of the vote.

The Ekiti Election is therefore evolving into more than a contest between political parties. It has become a debate over competing narratives: one side promising a New Dawn and a fresh direction, and the other defending its record while seeking continuity. As June 20 approaches, the most important political endorsement may ultimately come from ordinary voters, whose decision will determine whether Ekiti continues on its current path or embarks on a new chapter. OGM News Nigeria will continue monitoring developments as the campaign enters its decisive final days.
