The long-running Nigeria Air controversy has taken another dramatic turn after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly told a court that the aircraft presented during the unveiling of Nigeria Air was actually rented from Ethiopian Airlines for a three-day event.
The claim emerged during proceedings involving former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika and has reignited public debate over the controversial national carrier project.
EFCC Details Alleged Arrangement
According to testimony presented in court, the aircraft used during the unveiling ceremony was allegedly obtained from Ethiopian Airlines specifically for the launch event and was not an operational Nigeria Air aircraft.
Prosecutors reportedly argued that the presentation created the impression that the national carrier had commenced operations when, according to the allegations, the displayed aircraft was only temporarily leased for the occasion.
The Nigeria Air project was initially promoted as a major milestone for Nigeria’s aviation sector and attracted widespread attention during its launch.
Fresh Questions Over National Carrier Project
The latest allegations have renewed scrutiny of decisions made during the implementation of the airline project.
Supporters of the prosecution argue that the public deserves full accountability regarding how the project was handled, while others maintain that the court process should be allowed to determine the facts and responsibilities involved.
As the legal proceedings continue, the case remains one of the most closely watched aviation-related controversies in recent Nigerian history.
EFCC: Internet Users Bring Their Own Reactions
As expected, Nigerians quickly carried the discussion to social media. Some users jokingly described the aircraft as a guest performer that arrived for a brief appearance before departing.
Others humorously suggested that if the allegations prove true, the plane may have spent less time in Nigeria than some travelers spend during a long weekend.
Behind the jokes, however, many Nigerians are closely following the court proceedings
