Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has reportedly entered the latest Nigerian music-industry argument after rapper Erigga praised musicians who came from backgrounds without family wealth and had to grind for their earnings. What started as an innocent-looking shout-out has now produced enough online drama to make social-media spectators start checking whether popcorn prices have increased too.
Davido Says Rich Kids Also Know How To Hustle
Erigga’s post appeared to celebrate musicians who built their careers without the financial cushion of wealthy families, a sentiment that quickly attracted attention online. Davido, however, apparently saw the message differently and fired back, arguing that musicians who came from family money can also work hard and deserve recognition for reaching the top.
In classic Nigerian internet fashion, a motivational message suddenly became a courtroom case, with social-media users appointing themselves judges, lawyers and witnesses. Davido’s response essentially suggested that having a wealthy family does not automatically mean a person’s musical success was delivered by courier, while Erigga’s supporters argued that celebrating people who struggled from the bottom should not be interpreted as an attack on everybody who started with advantages.
Davido Rejects the Idea That Only Struggling Musicians Deserve Praise
The disagreement arrives at a time when Davido himself has recently been discussing both privilege and struggle. In August, he recalled experiencing financial difficulties after leaving home to pursue music, despite being born into a wealthy family. He also said the Nigerian music industry has become financially stronger while losing some of the unity that characterised its earlier years.
That background makes the latest exchange particularly interesting because Nigerian music has always had room for both grass-to-grace stories and artists who began with significant advantages. Davido has previously acknowledged that his background does not fit the traditional poverty-to-riches narrative, while maintaining that he built a name and fortune of his own. Erigga, meanwhile, has long been associated with songs and commentary reflecting working-class experiences and the struggles surrounding the Nigerian music industry.
For now, the internet appears to have reached the most Nigerian conclusion possible: both sides have supporters, everybody has an opinion, and one simple shout-out has somehow become a debate about privilege, hard work, family wealth and who suffered enough to qualify for a motivational certificate.
