APC Governance Strengthens Party, Weakens Opposition — Godswill Akpabio

Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has stated that the governing style of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is strengthening the ruling party while gradually diminishing the influence of opposition groups. Speaking at the party’s 8th National Convention in Abuja, Akpabio argued that ongoing reforms and governance strategies are attracting more Nigerians to align with the APC.

He maintained that since the Tinubu administration assumed office in May 2023, policy decisions and structural reforms have contributed to repositioning Nigeria both domestically and internationally. While acknowledging mixed reactions from citizens, the Senate President insisted that the long-term benefits of these reforms are becoming increasingly evident.

Reforms and Governance Drive Political Realignment

Akpabio highlighted several major reforms introduced under President Tinubu, including the removal of fuel subsidies, the harmonisation of multiple exchange rates, and policy adjustments in education and agriculture. According to him, these measures are not only addressing longstanding economic distortions but are also laying the groundwork for sustainable national development.

He further argued that improved infrastructure projects, such as expanded road networks linking key regions, are tangible signs of progress. These developments, he said, are enhancing connectivity, boosting commerce, and reinforcing public confidence in the administration’s agenda.

The Senate President emphasised that such reforms are central to what he described as “good governance,” which he believes is a key factor drawing citizens and political stakeholders closer to the APC.

Growing APC Influence and Institutional Alignment

Addressing party members at the convention, Akpabio declared that the APC’s growing strength is evident in its expanding political base, including an increasing number of state governors. He suggested that the APC dominance may continue to rise ahead of future elections, reinforcing its position within Nigeria’s political landscape.

He also underscored the importance of alignment between the executive and legislative arms of government. According to him, cooperation within the National Assembly is crucial for advancing the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda and ensuring smooth policy implementation.

Akpabio reassured APC members that both arms of government are working in tandem to support national progress, noting that legislative backing remains strong for policies introduced by the executive.

Security, Economy, and Party Unity in Focus

On national security, the Senate President acknowledged ongoing challenges but expressed confidence that the government is making steady progress. He assured Nigerians that efforts are underway to restore peace and stability across the country, with continued support from citizens and security agencies.

He also reiterated that despite economic difficulties, the administration is making significant strides in stabilising the economy and improving Nigeria’s global standing. According to him, these efforts are gradually restoring national dignity and confidence on the international stage.

The APC convention, attended by thousands of delegates, governors, and top government officials including President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, is expected to finalise key party leadership positions. The gathering reflects both the party’s internal consolidation efforts and its broader political ambitions.
