In a significant step toward strengthening its internal structures and democratic processes, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has approved a comprehensive timetable for its nationwide congresses, beginning April 7, and announced April 14 as the date for its National Convention. The decision was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where party leaders outlined a structured roadmap aimed at deepening participation and consolidating internal governance.
The ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed that the NEC meeting was both productive and well-attended, with all required members present. He emphasized that the resolutions reached would shape the party’s future direction, particularly as it prepares for its upcoming convention and grassroots-level elections.
ADC Structured Congress Timetable and Inclusive Participation
According to Abdullahi, the congresses will commence with polling unit and ward levels on April 7, followed by local government congresses on April 9, and state congresses on April 11. These staggered activities are designed to ensure orderly conduct and broad-based participation across all tiers of the party structure.
He noted that guidelines for the congresses have already been released, alongside the distribution of nomination forms nationwide. This, he said, is intended to guarantee inclusiveness and provide equal opportunities for qualified members to contest for party positions at various levels.
Abdullahi assured ADC members that the process would be transparent, open, and credible, adding that representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present at the NEC meeting to provide oversight and reinforce confidence in the process.
Convention to Ratify Key Policy and Constitutional Reforms
The ADC spokesperson clarified that the forthcoming National Convention will not serve as an elective gathering but will instead focus on ratifying key decisions previously taken by the NEC and the National Working Committee (NWC). These include reports from the Policy and Manifesto Committee as well as the Constitutional Review Committee.
He explained that the reports, which will be presented during the convention, are expected to define the party’s policy direction and constitutional framework for future political engagement and governance strategies.
Abdullahi also revealed that a convention committee has been constituted to oversee preparations, with further details to be provided by the party’s National Organising Secretary. He reiterated that elections for ADC offices would be conducted during the congresses at the polling unit, ward, local government, and state levels, rather than at the national convention.
ADC Leadership Calls for Unity and Grassroots Expansion
In his opening remarks, the ADC National Chairman, David Mark, described the NEC meeting as both an honour and a responsibility, urging members to remain committed to the party’s ideals. He commended party faithful for their loyalty and sacrifices, noting that unity and discipline are essential for progress.
Mark emphasized the need for collective leadership and internal cohesion, calling on members to rise above personal interests in order to strengthen the party’s institutional framework. He stressed that adherence to democratic principles would be critical in positioning the ADC as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.
He further advocated for deeper grassroots engagement, urging the party to connect with Nigerians across regions, religions, and generations. According to him, broadening the party’s national appeal is key to addressing the country’s challenges and advancing inclusive governance.
