OVER 5,000 ROUNDS RECOVERED FROM KIDNAPPERS AS ARMY SUSTAINS PRESSURE

The Army report say troops recover 438 rounds of one category of ammunition and another 4,725 rounds of special ammunition, bringing the total to 5,163 rounds. Other recovered items include two rifles, seven magazines, two bandoliers, two mobile phones and one power bank.

The recovery of such a large quantity of ammunition raises serious questions about the level of resources available to criminal networks operating within the area. While the Army describes the operation as another achievement in its ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity, residents will naturally want more than recovered items and military announcements. They want to sleep peacefully, travel without fear and conduct their daily activities without worrying about kidnapping. After all, security success should not only be measured by the number of items recovered but also by the safety people experience in their communities.

The Army says the latest operation has strengthened the gains recorded during the previous raid and reaffirmed its determination to sustain pressure on criminal elements in Kogi State. However, with other suspects reportedly escaping, the bigger question remains whether security agencies can completely dismantle the criminal network and prevent it from regrouping.
