Mayorkun’s Prenup and DNA-Test Demand Turns Dating Conversation Into Fresh Debate

Nigerian singer Mayorkun has sparked conversation about modern relationships after reportedly revealing that he once told a woman he was dating that he would require both a prenuptial agreement and a DNA test if they eventually had a child. According to the singer, the woman became upset by the proposal, turning what he apparently viewed as precaution into an emotional relationship issue.

The remarks have opened another familiar debate about trust, marriage, money and paternity. A prenup is generally a legal agreement made before marriage to establish how certain financial matters may be handled if the marriage ends, while a DNA paternity test can establish a biological relationship between a father and child. Recent Nigerian legal proceedings have also demonstrated that DNA testing can become relevant when paternity is disputed.

Mayorkun Puts Trust Under the Microscope

Mayorkun’s reported position essentially places two very different issues on the same relationship checklist: protecting financial interests and confirming biological paternity. For the singer, the proposal appears to have been about certainty, but for the woman involved, the request reportedly landed very differently.

And that is where the relationship mathematics becomes complicated. One person can see a prenup as financial planning and a DNA test as certainty, while the other can interpret the same demands as evidence that trust has already been placed on life support. Mayorkun’s revelation has therefore turned a private dating conversation into a public argument about what partners should be willing to discuss before marriage and children.

Prenuptial agreements are not simply celebrity paperwork; they are legal arrangements intended to address financial and property issues between prospective spouses. Their usefulness and enforceability depend on the applicable law and the circumstances surrounding the agreement, meaning couples generally need proper legal advice rather than simply downloading a template from the internet.

The DNA side of the discussion is even more personal because paternity involves a child as well as the adults in a relationship. Nigerian courts have recognised DNA testing as a means of establishing disputed paternity, including in a 2026 FCT High Court judgment that discussed DNA evidence in a paternity dispute.

Mayorkun’s comments have consequently added fuel to an already sensitive conversation: is requesting a prenup simply preparation, is requesting a DNA test simply certainty, or can both requests themselves create a trust problem? Whatever side people take, the singer’s story has shown once again that conversations about love, money and children can become very serious long before wedding bells ring. OGM News NG will continue watching the conversation for further reactions and developments.
